Is it really necessary to use Synthetic + oil change every 3k?
Is it really necessary? Our car doesn't even require Synthetic and requires 87 octance. Unless you have some major engine work, going F/I, or tracking your car all the time.
I've heard and seen some people use Mobile 1 synthetic blend and change the filter + oil at every 3k miles.
Are people just wasting money on every single oil change?
I've used synthetic (5W-20 Mobile 1 high mileage) at 93XXX and changed oil at 8-9K miles, when i checked the dip stick after 96XXX the oil was still perfectly fine and not even required to change oil.
Now i'm back to regular blend (Castrol 10W-30). To clear the record, YES! you can go to synthetic or regular anytime, don't believe all that "Once you go synthetic you can't go back to regular" and going from 5W-20 to 10W-30 doesn't affect the motor, I just went to 10W-30 because I'm at high mileage. I'm going to aim for about 5K miles until I do my next oil and filter change.
So to sort it up all. It is even necessary? Or am I just so call, doing no good for my engine?
I noticed I get better MPG on 87 octance than on 89 or 91 (Chevron and Shell), I've read about that and tested it. Seems like people would waste about $1-$2 ever fill up if they used 89 or 91.
BTW: All stock, no mods. :D

you are only supposed to use gas rated for your car. unless you are built, which you arent.
as for motor oil, its oil. change/add when you are low or when its dirty as hell. I dont know why people do this religiously.

I just don't get why people would say "Change oil every 3k miles on synthetic".
Was your synthetic or regular?

If people had an high revving engine I would understand why they would change their oil every 3-5K.

i would say it is recommended.
it's your car. you can change the oil whenever you feel like it.
i've had my car since it was at 26,xxx mi. now it's at 80,xxx. I've been doing oil changes every 5k since then. if you don't want to use synthetic just stick with something conventional like castrol gtx and switch it out every 3k.

Mobil 1 5w-30 + filter every 5k. oil is never black, but fairly dark brown. I could squeeze in another 2k but I find the first 2k of new change, the car runs better. always regular pump unless I'm driving up higher elevations then I would try 89 to avoid pinging.
strictly commuter. I'm sure those who reach near redline frequently have to alter their maintenance schedules.

If you follow the Owner's Manual you should be safe. If in doubt, send an oil sample to a lab for analysis, that will tell you more than a mechanic could or just by looking at it.

Yeah, that's what they told me also. I'm just wondering why people would still go synthetic and throw all that good oil to waste after 3k miles.

i run amsoil 0w30 and change it every 10k miles since i drive 150 miles a day 10k comes along quick. The car only honds 3 liters of oil so expensive amsoil isnt a problem

Sounds like the dealer is satisfied with staying status-quo on the topic and you're happy to spend more money than necessary.

Last time I checked with Mobile 1. I used 3 quarts and had my oil level was about an inch away from recommended.

I run Amsoil in my vehicles and change every 5K. Even that is probably too soon but it's what I've always done. You do not need to change the oil every 3K.

Re: Is it really necessary to use Synthetic + oil change every 3k?
actually oil expires and breaks down thats why you have to change it every 3k but synthetic oil can be changed every 5k....as for changing from synthetic your not supposed to go back to regular oil because of the seals they get used to synthetic oil then wear down quiker if you go back to regular oil....

Re: Is it really necessary to use Synthetic + oil change every 3k?
conventional oil is natural oil mixed and wax based which leaves harmfull deposits in the motor..
synthetic oil is a man made oil and cleans all the harmful deposits that convetional oil leaved behind..it lubricates the gears better and helps maintain a clean healthy motor...but just like all oil it expires so you have to change it every 4 months or 5k miles...

Even Castrol said so.
My regular doesn't seem to wear down quicker since i've switched. It's actually running perfectly fine.
