Default Help! 2002 Civic EX intermittenly won't start--cranks

Hi,

I have a 2002 Civic EX automatic with 98K miles. All stock parts. Last year when it got really cold (live in Colorado) it would not start. This happened about twice. It cranks but won't turn over. This year it started happening more frequently and even when the weather is nice. Some days it starts, others it just cranks. The battery is less than a year old. All spark plugs have been replaced within last month. Just replaced Fuel Relay as well but problem remains. Input and suggestions are appreciated! THANKS!

Mike

Try starting it with a jump start kit or jumper cables, if starts right up without issue it may be the alternator. Possibility started is on its way out.

Symptom:

Engine will not start. (MIL works, no DTC's set)

- Test the battery.
- Test the starter.
- Check the fuel pressure.
- Troubleshoot the fuel pump circuit.

Being that it's an intermittent problem, that makes finding the problem that much more difficult. Sounds like it's either an intermittent loose connection, or a fuel feeding issue.

Good luck with it.

Did you check any of the things I listed in post #7?
- Test the battery.
- Test the starter.
- Check the fuel pressure.
- Troubleshoot the fuel pump circuit.

What about the three essentials for an engine to run?

Air
Fuel
Spark

Which one is missing?

You're going to have to figure that out. This isn't something we can do for you over the internet.

Good luck with it.
When you are trying to start the car look to c if the key light is on off or flashing on the dash, try a differant key, If its turning over and not starting its not your battery, all that does is crank to motor and feed electric to the system.....just to stsrt it after that the alt kicks in... DO NOT REMOVE THE BATT CABLE WHILE THE CAR IS RUNNING, IT CAN CAUSE A SPIKE AND BLOW YOUR ALT... when you can get it started go to an auto zone or something like that if you have 1 they will check it for free....
Again as was stated.. theres a lot to try to trouble shoot and again good luck

So, took it into the repair shop and they figured out the problem.
About 7 months ago I lost the keys. I had new keys made. I then found the old key. The intermittent starting issue was tied to the keys. When I used the old one, it wouldn't start, the new one, it did. That was the issue.

Ah-ha! You probably should have mentioned that in your original post. Or mentioned that the "little green key light" in your cluster was flashing each time your car refused to start. That's the immobilizer indicator. It would have saved you some funds and guesswork.

Oh well. At least you got it figured out!

I know that this is an old post but I am having the same issue and have read a lot of posts about this. Lets start with what I have done up to this point.

I have changed the following

Complete distributor
Spark plugs and wires
Fuel Filter
Main Relay

Car is a 2003 Honda Civic EX with 200k miles

After replacing the above list of parts the car ran fine for about a week and started every time. Now it is intermittent. It will crank but no start and only has this issue after the car has ran for a short distance (less than 10 miles) and sits for less than 30 minutes before trying to start it back up.

could be a bad engine coolant temp sensor.

Changed out the fuel pressure regulator and the air intake sensor last night. Had no issues today so hope that was the fix. I believe it was the regulator but we will see. Thanks for responding.
