Default Door lock issue

My 2001 Civic is having an issue with its' driver's door lock; it doesn't work when the door is open. This is annoying because I cannot lock the car on the way out. I have to manually insert the key and lock the car after closing the door.

Not only does the electronic lock not toggle the door lock, but I cannot manually push the lock when the door is open either. Everything works perfectly with the door closed.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

I have to lock mine with the key also. The door lock on the panel only locks the passenger side as well. I figured the mechanism is burnt and don't mind using the key to lock it...

I'd like to know also though

No NOOBIE to Hondas (JK)...................its designed that way to keep you from locking yourself out of the car.

You can just hold the outside handle up while hitting the lock and it works. Its like that on Civics and Accords.

unfortunately this is a becoming trend with our em2s... you gotta bring it to the dealer. no worries b/c its covered since its a natural defect . soon after the inside door lock goes bust too.. sigh the troubles with our cars today...

It's not a natural defect. Honda designed their locks on most Civic's differently, to discourage people from locking their keys in their cars. It was the same way with my '93 EX.

Even with the door closed, my automatic lock won't work.

I just hold the inside handle on the "open" position, then hit the door lock button and KAPPOW they lock.
