Default 01 civic commuter axle clunk noise? HELP!

I've been having a problem with a rattle clunk at lower speeds, when I ride the brakes a tiny bid there is silence. So I rebuilt the front end. Everything is new except the struts and strut tower bearings.

So I was changing my oil and when reaching for the filter I noticed the axle has alot of play in it, like in and out of the hubs and auto tranny on both sides probably around .050 worth of play. When I move it hard back and forth I know it's the sound I'm hearing while driving. I have no clicking or vibration. So do they need replaced or could the splines need greased? The car has 145,000 on it mostly freeway driving. Would new axles and seals and everything tighten the axles up or is there another adjustment. The wheels have no bearing movement when jacked up and tested.

I have determined this is the dreaded clunk by checking and replacing everything else after searching. Also I have another 01 civic and there is zero play on those axles and no sound like I have. It's got a different set of rattles lol!

First of all, pageviews mean nothing these days. With sites (like Google) that cache pages for archiving, there are bots they use to do the caching. vBulletin forums (and most others) count these activities as page/thread views. And they take place often during a day. Around 90% of those pageviews aren't even performed by a human, so its not as if you're just being ignored.

Now, as for your request, you can attempt a CV rebuild yourself, but you'd be better off getting replacement axles. Sadly, you're going to need to get an alignment after replacing the axles, as you'll need to remove suspension components to get the axles out. You'll also need new transmission fluid.

Thanks, I just had the front end re-built, is it possible he didn't put it back together correctly? I don't have a common clicks or sounds like bad half shafts would normally make.

what do you mean the front end rebuilt? like everything... or? Buying new axles may help but i rather say take it to a mechanic to be sure.

I bought one of those kits that comes with lower control arms with all the bushings installed, tie rod ends and swaybars ends and new arm mounting hardware/bushings.

It's not the sway bar, links are new and really tight. It could be the bearings and seal's but I jacked it up and did the bearing test, the only problem i can find is the axle shafts move in and out about .05 and I can slide the shaft in and out and hear the hollow sounding noise I'm hearing. It's possible the kit wasn't installed quite right but the car drives like new but the sound drives me nuts. I'm going to replace it all next week, my main mechanic is on vacation this week. I had a 4wheel alignment done and everything came into spec even though I'm running 18's on 40 series tires. Car isn't lowered shocks and springs are stock.
