Default Rattle and Humm

I own a 2005 honda civic sedan 5 speed standard LX. For the last couple of weeks their is a noise coming from the front. It occurs mostly when starting and excellerating through 2nd and 3rd gear. Once past 60k it disappears. The engine seems fine - when I rev it in neutral no odd sound. 1st and 2nd also seem to chatter as I engage the clutch. I have tested the clutch by dropping it into 5th gear at 50k and the rpm drop to about 1000 rpm. It almost sounds like a rough sewing machine noise/ Any suggestions?

I had all sorts of issues with my 01' 5 spd --- 2nd gear pop out a rattle (similar to your description) that when away when clutch was in but present when in N with clutch out and accelerating through 1-2-3 until road noise suppressed it ... turned out I had a fried 2nd gear & sychros for 2-3&5 + bad input shaft bearing and seals. I finally caved and had it rebuilt. The shop did a great job plus found I needed some motor mounts to boot ... 2K later she's mint. No noise shifts are crisp and smooth. 130K on the OD. oh well.

Thanks for the info rithem. I have 140K and I thought this may be the beginning of the transition going? If you don't mind me asking what was the cost and who did the work? dealer or independent?

the dealer wouldn't touch it ... I pushed for a quote but it turned out too be much trouble for me. The dealer wanted to go the straight used swop route but couldn't offer me squat for warranty (30 days) so that was out = I went elsewhere.

I live in Rhode Island and had a family owned Tranny shop do the work, very honest folks referred to me by my friend at Sullivan Tire. It took them about a week but they gave me a 12K / 1 year warranty - I will have my tranny services (fluid changes etc) done exclusively by them from now on. If you are near RI - I can PM the contact. It was worth every penny - plus he gave me all my old worn parts not sure why I wanted them :-| ?! -- he explained everything he did in detail and showed me all that was worn out etc. I'm happy with the decision though 2K lighter in the wallet the car will last for a long time.

Thanks for the info rithem much appreciated. I live in southern Ontario so I will look around and make some calls. I like doing a lot of my own work but this one i will leave to the experts.

I had a similar noise on my 2003 Hybrid before I sold it... turned out to be a broken spring!
