Default 2002 Civic EX auto, need new transmision...few questions.

The car needs a new transmission. It is an EX model, has the vtec engine. My question is can I drop a DX/LX/EX auto transmission directly in no modification, or does it strictly have to be an EX transmission? I do not want to do any modification at all when me and a friend drop the engine and swap.

Additionally, whats the deal with JDM transmissions? Same question. Will a DX/LX/EX JDM auto transmission directly fit in no mod, or does it have to be a EX? Or will none of them work without modification.

Any recommendations on where to buy one? Not looking to spend a ton of money, probably around $500 give or take. Don't really care about a warranty. Would you buy used US market or JDM?

I have also read the transmissions in the 04 and 05 are better than 01-03? Is it signifigantly better?

Thank you for all your help.

Ok so based on the searches I have made, you have to drop a EX transmission in, LX and other models wont work. So that answers one of my questions.

Now I am trying to figure out if I can drop a JDM EX transmission right in no mods or anything, or if it has to be a US transmission.

Just something to consider - 1st photo (isn't mine) is the picture that inspired me to take it out the top. 2nd photo is mine just before removal. With the load leveler it was a piece of cake. Got other tips if you want them but I'm an amateur.

Cool. Yeah were dropping it with the leveler, and a tranny jack. Taking out the engine seems unnecessary.

Rt on. You said "drop the engine and swap". Since the shop method is out the bottom for both I thought you were dropping the whole thing. No way is better, it seems, but it was handy having it all out. Did timing belt, seals, engine mounts, radiator, and fixed oil pan leak all in one shot and no sub-frame removal.

yea, did not have an engine lift to bring it all out, and really didnt want to take out the motor. just completed the transmission swap all day saturday. dropped sub frame/tranny got the new one in. Then took off the head and did the headgasket, along with all belts, waterpump etc all the stuff you would normally do. car runs awesome now. I have put abou 100 miles on it since and I think I ended up getting a good used auto tranny. its an 03 with 71k, and it shifts very very nice. even tho I added new fluid, im going to drain and refill very soon so I can get as much old fluid out as possible. whole job took about 14 hours. alot of time pissing around though.
