Default 2001 Civic EX Maintenance Question

Hey everyone,

I have a 2001 Honda Civic EX Coup that is at about 110,000 miles. I am being told by a mechanic that I should get the timing belt, some pump (water, maybe?), and several other things replaced.

Is any of this accurate? What would you all recommend I get done as far as maintenance goes? I haven't done anything to my car besides get the oil changed regularly and new tires put on when needed - haven't had any issues.

Thanks for your knowledge!

customer of mine has about the same milage i asked if you would be interested but he said it was done at 80k. so i never minded that... take a look at the belt if it looks like crap then do it.. if not wait till your water pump starts making noise.. just my opinion im sure someone out there will differ

I appreciate the response, tablecivic. Thank you!

Any other things I should get replaced, cleaned, tuned-up for maintenance purposes?

Wow, great information. Thanks, toyomatt84 - that link is great!

Do you have any idea how much it would cost to get the following done/replaced? Rough guess?

- oil change
- rotate tires
- replace trans fluid
- replace spark plugs
- replace timing belt
- replace water pump

I know I should get an actual estimate somewhere, but I just want to be prepared for the number when it comes, haha. Around $1000? More?

Around here the timing belt package (belt, tensioner, water pump) runs $600-900 at the dealer or independents. The other misc will run around $150.

It's going to depend a lot on where you take it.

Routine maintenance like oil changes and tire rotations... typically set you back around $30 - $60. Transmission fluid change and spark plugs, roughly $30 per maintenance there. Timing belt and water pump, well that'll tend to run you upwards of $500 - $600, due to labor.

If you're mechanically inclined, I'd recommend doing it yourself. Part's all not all that much. I would recommend changing out both belts, tensioner, and water pump. If you do it yourself, first time around, it may take 2-3 hrs.

I had my car in the shop at 125k miles and the guy started it up, he said it sounded funny and let it idle. the timing belt started to break and the guy shut it off just in time. Inspected the head and everything was fine. replaced the timing belt and water pump.

Had I driven it away and it snapped at more than 1k rpms, I would be out a motor.
