Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
...you're telling me theres 11 other sets I could *possibly* buy? heheh
So the actual wheel face itself, thats aluminium honeycomb like the Starsorb?
The whole look to the wheel just gives a very polished/finished feel. More-so even than other racing wheels SSR produced, which are a little rough.. and no real branding/naming other than 'SSR' (if at all).
If they were made for racing, what possible race series would the be for, in those sizes, etc?
Ever come across anything more about this Fushimi racing team? ever seen any other of these for sale or in pictures?
Its all just too damn interesting..

I have seen a single wheel for sale way back when I snagged these up, and it was VERY used (chunk missing in the aero disk). The finish on these isn't what I would call "great" by any means. The paint is very cheap looking, and I know that if I put them in direct sunlight it wouldn't take long for them to yellow/crack/fade/oxidize. I do not know what race series they were for, but I do believe the car I saw it pictured on was either an A31 Cefiro or similar. I have lost said picture after many years and a massive failure on one of my PC's.

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
All very interesting anyway. I'll just continue endlessly trawling Yahoo..
Fiddled around today taking photos of another relatively high-end wheel from the late 80's / early 90's SSR era..
SSR Star Magna
16 x 7 square set.
9/1990.
I'd been keeping an eye open for a complete/tidy set of these, which is no easy task. Its an interesting one, as they do NOT last; they seem to corrode badly, and worn out sets are near worthless as a result. I've watched sets of these go for nothing.
Like others, I'm a little dubious about how to go about refinishing them properly, so just had to wait for a clean enough set..
These would have looked so damn sharp when new.
I'll definitely be keeping a lookout for a NOS set.. the finish and detailing on these is just great.
Interestingly, the collar and whole electron cap body is black plastic.. which is odd, but obviously something to do with that 'absolute ultimate in lightness and strength' hah
Anyway, just a cool old SSR that doesn't get much love.

Another interesting thing to note about it, is the detail work in the casting. Those fins along the hub, the letters for "Star Magna", and the gusseting along the outer portion of the face are all part of the original casting. HUGE detail in an old cast wheel.

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
Lets not forget the hollow-face Mclaren's! This is really nice..
As for the Star Magna's, I've noticed the spoke detailing is different to this one - manufactured only one month before. (the wheel is a 17", but the face is no doubt the same). Odd.

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
On an again, interesting, note.. (:p)
Took some comparison photos the other day between the SSR and Work locking caps. Used an EX-C Neo cap, since the removable coin/cap-cap makes it the most similar of the SSR Electron Lock caps..
The EX-C Neo cap shown is from 1988, and the Work cap possibly a little earlier.
(ignore the lighting change in the photos..! haha)
The caps are incredibly similar - to the point of likely having the same people/company involved.
one small difference between the two caps shown, is the pin that holds the slide's cam roller wheel. Its a solid piece of (brass maybe?) rather than the small piece of tube that the EX-C cap shows. The solid pin is actually happens to be something I've noticed in earlier SSR caps I've opened...
I want to pull the Work caps apart further.. but was hesitant to damage them. I'll keep a lookout for a junk locking cap for that.
Anyway, the SSR's system is much nicer; from the metal collar and key, to the thread in the cap body (rather than a plastic insert), the external appearance of the lock face, and the cap's ability to ratchet onto the collar when locked.
Fun to see them side-by-side anyway.

he is truly one humble - accommodating guy, I am proud to say even though I never met him personally, he help me a lot in learning with wheels, such a nice guy, GOD blessed his soul, prayer for his family, friends. I will be missing his comments here.

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
No, sorry. I only have the ones from my set..
More random SSR junk - couple kits of locking nuts. I'm still casually looking for the flat-key type...

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
/bump..
More random SSR..
1986 and 1987.. thoroughly..!
Both 16x7
Both September 1990
100% identical barrels...
Replated a heap of rear lock covers and screws; and a set of once-gold EX-C short-caps redone in an original polish finish...
..all among a heap of nuts and bolts that were redone...
Token BV1, as always..

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
Mine are still obviously chipped/marked/scratched/etc; but I've given them a thorough clean, polished the faces, and cleaned the barrels where the tyres mount. I wouldnt mind getting the lips redone properly, but for now they're pretty enough. I really like them.
I thought yours were very good already? I'm always hesitant to fully strip and re-do them unless they really need it. They're only original once eh!
Another set I'm trying to complete/restore now though..
Original chrome, Hart Spinner Fins. May 1986.
Not bad shape for their age; but the anodizing on the lips has given up, and the plating on the hardware is toast. Couple marks on each of the faces, but I'll try and get away with those as is.
I have some original 7.5" -6 and 8" +-0 barrels for them I'll likely use too..
Biggest trouble I'm having is getting a set of Spinner Fin plates - hence the Hiro V1R plates sitting there! If anyone has a set they're willing to trade for those (or sell) let me know!
All good fun..

Attended JCCS 2014 in Long Beach. Yes, I need to lower my car more just need some smaller tires. Thinking of running 195/40/16. It has 205/45/16 now but it rubs even at this height.

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
I love the period correct look - the subtle sizes and nice height; but yeh, 205/45 on a 16 is just a little too tall.
Love the car, colour and wheels regardless. Could appreciate it with four flat tyres..!
Finding a nice set of period 15" Reverse barrels wont be hard (something 4x100-friendly.. the relentlessly common 6.5" +~20) and is a great idea.
How scratched are the faces? the paint on this era of SSR is soft.. it polishes up beautifully if there's still decent paint left! Cant remember how good your decals were either, but can get some closeups or trace mine if you need...
