i didnt sand anything i used krylon paint which sprays real even so i didnt have to worrie about lines and its true about the white as you can see on my hatch up top i did it with out a worrie of lines since i had a good tip but i personaly think it depends on brand of paint and tip on can and of course you need some type of a flow to follow

Start off with something like 80 grit to take down any areas that might need work - like a dent or something.. fix the problem, and primer if you have bare metal.. Instead of just scuffing the car try to make it smooth pre-paint by going to higher grits, stop around 300 grit before spraying.. I didn't primer as I didn't go to bare metal aside from a place or two - but you can also see sanding marks in my paint here and there from only going to 100 grit and spraying..
Spray in a nice, even pattern - I liked doing it panel by panel but you have to put something in between the gaps, like a wide piece of thick paper if you don't want crazy over spray.. After 2 coats, wet sand the paint, and apply another 2.. Wetsand again, apply one more, and wetsand one last time.. Touch up any areas that might be light, and depending on your paint, you can apply a clear coat - or if you have the paint that comes with a clearcoat in it, you might cause a reaction and the paint will **** right up..
Once it's dry for a day or two, buff the paint..
I'll be re-doing my paint this spring and doing it the longer way, but still the cheaper way and I'll update with new pics to show how it turns out..
