i helped out a friend do his 93 prelude, along with another friend making it 3 people working on the car. total time was a week, working about 6 hours each day. total cost = $100 his pocket. he treated me and our other friend out to lunch. we did it for the learning experience

Day 1: washed car and removed hood, fiberglass kit, fenders, weather strip around door. applied aircraft paint remover on the car to bring it down to bare metal. after it dried, scraped everything off. car is stripped of paint and is down to bare metal. did the same for the hood and fenders.

Day 2: bought several cans of primer (forgot how many it was last summer). each of us concentrated on a particular part on the surface. we sprayed about 2-3 coats of primer, applying light coats each time. in between each coat we wetsanded with 400 grit sandpaper. end of the day car was primered.

Day 3: bought several cans of paint (kragens, autozone, etc.) we used the same procedures as when we were doing the primer. 2-3 light coats, let dry. this time we didnt sand until we put the final 3rd coat on. wetsanded at 1000 grit sand paper.

Day 4: we looked over the car to see if we needed to touch up anywhere. applied more paint where needed. wetsanded car with 1000 grit sand paper again. most of the time today was spent wetsanding.

Day 5: bought several cans of clearcoat. used the same steps as primer and paint. we waited till the very end to wetsand it with 2000 grit sandpaper. it seemed like the clearcoat needs a lil longer time to dry before touching it in any way, or else your finger print will appear haha

Day 6: the car is basically done. we applied rubbing compound on the surface of the car to remove imperfections, scratches, to basically blend the clear into the paint. spent a lot of time with this. reinstalled all the parts that were previously removed.

Day 7: done with the car. from a distance it looks good but up close you can tell that its spray painted. surface is very smooth tho because we spent a lot of time wetsanding. washed/waxed car and we're done.

Recommendations: if you ever consider this, take your sweet *** time. once you start to rush, you will see paint drips, a lot of little imperfections. remove all plastic/fiberglass parts before applying paint remover. make sure when you wetsand, the surface is very wet. we used a hose and/or bucket of water at all times. i think thats about it that you need to know. since then his car has now been repainted at my uncles body shop and looks much better than before..but for a $100 paint job it looked good..good luck with whatever you do

wetsanding is just regular sanding, but you make sure there is a layer of water between the sand paper and surface..

how would you keep a layer of water when sanding... lets say the side of the car. do you get a water hose and keep water running over while your sanding?

not really keeping a layer exactly, just makign sure the surface is well lubricated. you can either use a hose (recommened) or a bucket of water nearby works fine also. as long as you keep the sandpaper clean and wet, and the surface is wet also.

what i'd do is sand the car down to bare sheet metal, use some kind of chemical (forgot the name of) to "clean" the metal of contaminants and stuff, spray on a couple coats of primer, wet sand the primer, then spray on the base coats...i never done it before so i dunno if that's the correct way
