Hello, I have a 2005 Honda Accord LX. I have 100K miles on it and I am wandering if I should change the timing chain and water pump. From past experience I had a timing chain break on an older car I had so this is really preventative maintenance to avoid it from happening again. I have called the dealership and they tell me a bunch of stuff about the chain is strong and it won't break, but I continuously tell them that if the chain breaks like it did in my first car that I'm a** out because the engine will be messed up and will cost more. No one will give me a real answer. So does anyone out there have any insight on what I should do? Should I keep searching around to get it changed at a dealership or just trust in there judgement?

You had a timing chain break before? Under normal circumstances they don't break as usually they are comprised of a dual row of links. I can say you're more than likely okay with your existing chain

i work at honda as a technician. we never changed a timing chain. unless we change the block. at 100k miles water pump would not be a bad idea. also spark plugs and your fluids tranny coolant.

Since the water pump is external I wouldn't even give it a second thought till it starts making noise or leaking. It takes all of 30 minutes to replace it.

are you sure the older car that you had the timing 'chain' break didn't have a timing 'belt' instead?

I had the 105k service done on my 2003 Accord V6 Navi autoTrans at 104,900. I also had the waterpump replaced and plugs. I had the dealer return the old belt to me. I did a thorough inspection of the belt and my assessment is that it looked nearly new and could have easily 10-15k more....that is of course I personally will drive that much over the next 105k but make your own choice.

The dealer noted that the previous owner had a new transmission installed under an extended warrany at 54,000.
