Oil Consumption of 1 qt/1,000 miles?!
Greetings!
I'm new to the group so forgive me if I'm doing something wrong or not following protocol.
I bought a used 2004 Accord LX with a 2.4 liter about a year ago. To date I have around 150,000 miles on it. My concern/question has to do with excessive oil consumption. Shortly after purchasing my Accord my oil light came on while on the highway. I pulled over to the closet auto parts store and topped it off with about 3 qts of oil! Since then upon my routine inspections of my car I've averaged my oil consumption to about 1 qt/1,000 miles! I've read quite a few posts on various blogs about some oil consumption issues with this engine but none as severe as my own. This obviously concerns me.
Has anyone experienced oil consumption at this rate on their own Honda's or one they've serviced? What repairs or actions did you take?
Thanks in advanced for reading and commenting.

Re: Oil Consumption of 1 qt/1,000 miles?!
I was having that issue on my 2013 Subaru. About a month after I bought it I was loosing about 1.5qts/1k miles. After I did allot of research and said it's the piston rings. On the Subaru owners I heard they replace the piston rings and still having that problem. My motor is a Flat 4 Boxer motor. All I did is switch Subaru brand oil to Ardeca oil brand and added Ardeca C TEC 1000 oil Additive and Ardeca PXC 300 in the fuel tank. I have now put on 3,500 miles and have not loss any oil.
I would suggest maybe adding oil additive on your next oil change if it don't help then you may need new piston rings.

It also depends on how long you plan to keep the car. There are things you can do in the short term. Maybe also use a slightly heavier weight oil. You are also welcome to mix two different weight of oil (I've done that), and see if it does anything.
Long term, I'm guessing your engine may be done. Check the oil pressure? Compression test? These would need special tools, or you'll have to pay a tech, and that's going to cost $$$$.
So it goes back to how long do you plan to keep your car...

(You can also check for oil leaks and or possibly run some Seafoam through the engine to possibly clean out the control rings.)

Re: Oil Consumption of 1 qt/1,000 miles?!
It is an issue that Honda has had for awhile now. Honda states that 1 qt of oil loss per 1000 miles is within spec. Honda did just settle a class action lawsuit but it was for V6 models only.
I had the same issue with my 09 accord. Purchased from the dealership with 72k miles. 1 month later the oil light came on. I was going through 1.2 quarts every 1000 miles. Honda switched to a new oil life monitor (I forget when) that states the percentage of oil life left. A lot of people were ignoring the miles they were driving and only changing the oil when the percentage read 0%. This is in turn caused damage to the rings and/or cylinder walls. When people realize the problem they trade the vehicles off instead of fixing them. My car showed no signs of consumption when I bought it. You can either do some motor work, or keep extra oil in your car at all times, or sell the car. Either way it sucks.
