Default Increasing my mpg. Turbo?

I drive a 4 door 2007 accord 4 cylinder engine. I know I get good mpg but I really want to get more out of it, my commute is 2 hours round trip everyday. Is there a small turbo I could install for this and does anyone know much more mpg I could expect to get? I'm not interested in increased performance or Anthony like that. Thanks.

No. Turbo will not increase MPG. Save your $$$ with well tuned car, and proper air in tires. Using the hybrid argument, you will never get your $$$ back in terms of savings.

The best way is to learn how to drive. It's actually takes an effort. We think we know, but really, we don't know.

Rent a GM (for example) car that tells you actual MPG. And learn from there.

I do drive a GM car daily. When I turn the Instant MPG off, I tend to go back to my old ways, which is not bad. But I don't get that extra 2MPG (town) by being conscious of what I'm really doing.

Yea good point. I thought a turbo would burn fuel more efficiently. No?

If you want to increase fuel economy, remove your catalytic converter.

You can get scangauge or a one of those PLX Kiwi mpg gauges. I guarantee using one of those for a couple weeks and you will see results. Or get a turbo and screw getting better mpg and enjoy the "other" benefits .

DUDE, if you really want to see better mileage, aero mods are the way to go, you can increase your efficiency two fold.... with extreme work. This is all pretty extreme, but look up aero civic, or search around ecomodder for small things you can do. Really though, if cars were more aerodynamic we would get MUCH better gas mileage, especially at speed.

I'm not so sure about the power gains, but at least with respect to fuel economy, removal of the catalytic converter is beneficial.

Do more research on turbos. A turbocharger forces air into the engine, while the fuel injectors inject more gas to keep the same ratio as before. The larger amount of air and gas being compressed and ignited, the more POWER you get out of your engine. This does, however, LOWER your gas mileage, as you're injecting more gas into the engine.
Someone I know, before he turbo'd his Civic, would get 30 mpg, while he had a turbo he would get about 22 mpg.
I have yet to turbo my Integra, but I can imagine the drops will be similar.

Actually I think at this point, if you want to save on fuel, you should find a new job rather than commuting 2 hours lol. Or move?

Look at where he live. In CA, 2 hr drive time always need to a follow up question of How Far?

When I lived in the SF Bay area, it would take me 1.25hr to travel 11 miles to work. When I bought a house in Central Valley, it would take me 2 hrs to travel 60 miles. Best time was 1.75hr.

You see where the traffic problem is?

OP may be in the same situation.

Thats just because you Californians don't know how to drive right. Need to get a little more creative than sitting in bumper-to-bumper.

Try driving in the break-down lane, on shoulders, over sidewalks...hell, even off-road...

My best mpg went from 32mpg N/A to 37mpg boosted.

I constantly get considerably better mpg with the turbo doing easy highway driving than when I was N/A. just have to have a large enough turbo to keep out of boost under regular driving so your AFR's will stay lean.

City mpg has stayed the same around 23-25mpg.

When I'm using boost, the mpg is a different story, lol.

yeah, thats what i was saying, or a moped, or a bicycle.. i mean, if a 11 mile trip took me 1.5 hours, i would definitely invest in a bicycle, especially considering you can travel year round with that..

well you are simply leaning out your mixture. its not the turbo that is getting you better gas mileage.

That's true if you're trying to make more power out of the engine and going for performance. Turbocharging is actually beneficial for your MPG if you drive correctly and don't have an excessive set-up.

Turbocharging is very efficient way of making power because it converts the energy from the force/speed of exhaust gases into something that is beneficial by pushing air into the engine.
Let's say for the sake of simplicity in understanding he consistently makes 150whp in his daily driving N/A. If he has a (preferably small in this case) turbocharger and drives in such a way that he never makes any more than that 150whp, his mpg will rise. This is because it is EASIER for his engine to make that power. As long as he doesn't use that to make more power and drive faster he is fine and will notice better MPG

This makes sense to me actually, I didn't think about it that way. But what doesn't make sense to me is that the only reason it's EASIER (lower RPM) for him to get 150whp is because more fuel is being put into the engine at the lower RPM after the turbo. So basically I can see how it's easier, which would be getting that 150whp at a lower RPM, for his engine to make the hp, but the reason it's making that 150whp at the lower rpm is because more fuel and air is being compressed and ignited at that rpm....

If you were desperate enough, you could do some AeroCivic mods.. google it.

thats not how it works. you are still using more fuel because you are forcing air into the cylinders. with a small turbo like you said it will spool much quicker than a large turbo meaning if you were driving 70mph on the highway you would most likely be in boost the entire time...therefore getting worse gas mileage. the motor doesnt have to work any easier to make 150 hp na or 150 hp with a turbo. do some more research on turbos and how they work. go and buy corky bells turbo charging book.

you could potentially get similar gas mileage...possibly even the same....but not more.

even if you could get 5 mpg better the 3k you had to spend to get there wouldnt be worth it. 5mpg x 20 gal tank (thats a big *** tank) = 100 miles per tank or you saved 40 dollars (gas at 2.50/gal)

that is 75 tanks of fuel before you reach the benefits.

the accord is 17.1 gallons so 85.5 miles to the tank or 34 dollars you save over the old mpg. 88 tanks of fuel to get the money back. that is almost 53k miles before you save 3k. but what about the extra cost for oil for the turbo? etc...just not worth it.
