DIY HID kit installation - XenonDepot Volt kit installed in 2007 Honda Accord

HID INSTALLATION NOTE: I have read many posts that some Accord owners don’t believe HID’s should be used within a “reflective headlight housing.” If this is your opinion, please don’t read or comment on the rest of this review. If you don’t have a concern with this, please continue reading about my HID installation in my Gen7 Accord sedan. If you still don’t believe HID’s belong in a “reflective headlight housing,” the supplier I purchased my kit from, does offer a selection of replacement “halo projector headlights” as well.
Hey Accord owners!
I wanted to let you know about a great product that I just installed in my Gen7, 2007 Honda Accord. I previously put a set of XenonDepot Xtreme HID’s in my 2008 Honda Odyssey and was so pleased with the results, I decided to contact the same supplier again to see what other products he might suggest regarding HID for my Accord.
I haven’t seen too many Gen7 Accords modified with HID, so I thought this would be a great write-up to post. At the moment, I don’t plan on doing much mod work with my Accord like I did with my Odyssey, but maybe in time… I’ll change my mind.
The biggest thing I wanted to consider when selecting a HID kit, was choosing one that would increase my light output, while providing additional safety when driving in low light conditions. I contacted Steve at XenonDepot, after having a great experience with him with a prior purchase. He recommended I look at the 9006 4300K VOLT HID Digital Kit. The VOLT kit, is similar to the other 9006 kit I installed in my Honda Odyssey, but doesn’t require the use of a relay harness. The use of a relay is completely optional with this kit and can be added later if desired. There are so many light kits available on the internet, choosing one can be completely overwhelming! Since I had a good experience with Steve at XenonDepot prior, I knew that I would be receiving a top quality product, guaranteed to provide me great customer satisfaction! Steve has always been able to answer any questions I’ve had with complete product knowledge. As usual, the kit arrived quickly and I was ready to get started!

Since I know many of you may be interested in the install... here are my installation specs step-by-step with some pictures taken along the way.
Installation of the VOLT 9006 - The setup:
The setup is really simple for the "do-it-yourselver," in addition to those who may not be that handy! Straight out of the box... the install directions for my kit were easy to understand. If not, read on and follow these notes for your own setup. Total installation for me was maybe a few hours. Think you can't do this... you can, especially since I have spelled out all my thoughts and installation tips below!
Here are the parts that come in the kit: 1-pair of gloves, 2-HID bulbs, 2-ballasts, 2-pieces of double sided tape, 2-mounting brackets, 2-bags of screw/bolts and several zip-ties... that's it! I also received 2-wire relay harnesses (optional, not required).
The install:
The kit requires each light to use it’s own ballast system. One thing I liked about the kit was the quality! Ever know when you can tell if something is going to be good quality or if it’s going to be cheapo? Is this something that’s going to give me a problem later? Is it going to last? I haven’t had to worry about this with anything I have received from XenonDepot!
The biggest concern I had, was to determine how I was going to access the back of the headlight units under the hood? In the Gen7 Accord, there is very limited space to work with around the engine and headlights. I thought about doing this installation in 2003 with our previous Accord, but changed my mind when I thought the best way to access the headlights, was from inside the front fender wells. I can tell you, this isn’t true and there is an easier way to do this mod! After a little thinking and talking to a few Accord owners… here’s how I did it! Lets get to work!
The best piece of advice I can give is… Do this installation on a cool vehicle that has been sitting for a while! It’s much easier to work on a cool vehicle then a hot one as you'll have your hands near some parts that are typically hot when the vehicle has been running.
The wiring:
The VOLT DIGITAL HID kit doesn’t require the use of a relay harness to provide additional power from your battery, but can be added if desired. Since the draw is a low volt draw, I chose not to install it. I may choose to install it at a later time. Attach the VOLT SLIM BALLAST connector to the HID BULB connector. Attach the 2 single BALLAST plugs to the 2 single BULB plugs. The other connector coming off of the BULB, will either connect directly to your optional WIRING HARNESS or directly into your FACTORY WIRING. Wiring will be identical for both Left and Right headlights.
This whole kit is "plug ‘n play" which gives you the option to remove or install it without any wire modifying. While no HID kit is technically street legal, this one provides a safe alternative for improved visibility and offers one of the best near to OEM HID options for the Honda Accord. I specifically selected the 9006 kit (4300K output), because I believe it’s within the legal limits of HID standards on other factory HID equipped vehicles.
LEFT HEADLIGHT
To access the back of the “Left Passenger Headlight” use your left hand to push the main radiator hose slightly to the right, while sliding your right hand down underneath to access the headlight unit.
First, unclip the bulb connector of the 9006 low beam bulb. Next using a small Phillips screwdriver in your right hand, slightly loosen 2 to 3 of the bulb screws on the back of the bulb. Space is tight, so the smallest Phillips screwdriver you can use, the better.
NOTE: Be sure you have located the correct bulb and are not loosening the 9005 high beam bulb. The bulb sizes are completely different and have different diameters. The bulbs are not interchangeable in the headlight housing. Be sure to also have a good handle on the screwdriver so you don’t drop it accidentally. I managed to do this when installing the right bulb. I was then able to rattle the bottom liner of the front bumper, until I could see the screwdriver and pull it through one of the liner holes.
You don’t need to unscrew the bulb screws completely, just loosen each screw a few turns. You may be able to only loosen 2 of the 3. Once loosened, the factory low beam bulb will then allow you to turn it “counter clockwise” unlocking and releasing it from the headlight unit. Pull the bulb straight out the back of the headlight and remove it carefully from the engine compartment. Wearing the right nitrile glove supplied with the kit, carefully remove the HID bulb from the plastic twist casing. Make sure to not touch the bulb with your bare hands. Carefully guide the bulb down past the radiator hose and into the headlight assembly. Align the 3 seating points of the bulb in the headlight assembly and rotate “clockwise” to lock the new HID bulb into place. Retighten screws.
Due to the installation space being tight, it’s nearly impossible to photograph these steps. I’ve tried to describe them as clearly as possible. The best position to accomplish the installation of the left bulb, is to move your body directly over the left corner of the car at a 90° angle. With your body directly over the corner of the car, view your progress inserting the bulb, by looking directly into the outside glass of the headlight (near the front left fender). Then, move your head over to the right down near the front radiator and engine. I used a small shop adjustable light, to illuminate the areas were I was working. If you attach all your wiring prior to putting the new HID into the headlight unit, all you have remaining is to secure the ballast and wires.
Securing the LEFT HEADLIGHT Wiring:
To secure the wiring, the kit includes: 2-pieces of double sided tape, 2-mounting brackets and several zip-ties. I chose to use zip-ties to secure my wiring. Gather the wires neatly and position the ballast down into the front of the vehicle just to the left of the radiator. Loop the zip-tie through the holes of the ballast casing and around the wiring. Loop the rest of the wires together toward the left headlight and secure them using another zip-tie. Trim off access. Prior to securing the wiring, test to ensure Left HID ignites successfully. If not, check all connectors to be sure they are connected completely.
RIGHT HEADLIGHT
Again, make sure your vehicle is cool! To access the back of the “Right Driver Headlight” I found the best way to do so is to remove the battery. Removal is quite simple and gives you plenty of space needed to replace the right bulb easily. Before you remove the battery, be sure you have the RADIO CODE that came originally with your vehicle. This can probably be found with your owner paperwork or often can be found printed on a sticker on the inner left side of your glove box. Once power is removed from the vehicle, you will need to “unlock the radio” when your battery is reconnected. To “unlock the radio”, turn on the car and enter the RADIO CODE using the 1-6 present numbers. If you do not have the CODE for your vehicle, you should be able to find it here: https://radio-navicode.honda.com/
It has been noted in another thread, that the “LX” model does not require a RADIO CODE. If you are still having trouble unlocking your radio, see your local Honda dealer. There should be no cost for this service.
First, remove the secure bar from the top of the battery using an adjustable or socket wrench. Disconnect the positive and negative battery terminals and move them off to each side. Remove the battery sleeve and battery. Unclip the bulb connector of the 9006 low beam bulb. If you attach all your wiring prior to putting the new HID into the headlight unit, all you have remaining is to secure the ballast and wires.
Securing the RIGHT HEADLIGHT Wiring:
To secure the wiring, I again used several zip-ties. Gather the wires neatly and position the ballast down just underneath the negative battery cable. Loop the zip-tie through the holes of the ballast casing and around the wiring shown. Loop the rest of the wires together toward the left and secure them using another zip-tie. Trim off access. Prior to securing the wiring, test to ensure Right HID ignites successfully. If not, check all connectors to be sure they are connected completely.
Optional RELAY HARNESS Installation:
If you are going to use a relay harness, connect the relay between the factory wiring and the bulb/ballast assemblies. Locate main bolts along the frame on each side of the vehicle that you can attach the ground negative wires to securely. Connect the positive wires of each harness directly to the battery. Test lights to ensure that the HID’s are igniting properly and everything is grounded sufficiently. See troubleshooting information provided with the kit, if you are experiencing problems. The most comment reason the HID will not ignite when using a harness, is often related to a faulty ground.

Yes Sir! The sedan uses a 9006 bulb for the low beams just like the 2007 model shown above. You would need to get a the same kit for the 2010 Sedan. Here is a link to our Volt HID kit:

The Volt line is available in 4300k & 6000k. The 4300k kit will offer you the brightest possible output. The 6000k kit will offer you a bright white output with a very slight bluish tone. However, you will lose approximately 20% of useable light output when going to the higher K bulbs.

Does this affect the day time running lights or are they integrated with the high beams?
I was interesting in potentially buying these to install for both the low and high beams (I like a lot of light while I'm driving) but I've read that they aren't really used very much for high beam replacement because you often have to turn them on and off for oncoming traffic which leads to premature bulb/ballast failure.

Hi,
Thank you for your response.
As per your questions:
1) Your vehicle uses the high beam bulb for the DRL meaning that upgrading your low beams to HID would have no effect on your high beams.
2) You are correct about not being able to flash if you were to upgrade your high beams to HID. If you are planning on upgrading your high beams to HID you would need to be aware of these 2 things:
- You would need to deactivate your DRL.
- You cannot use your high beams to flash anyone once you have upgraded them to HID as it would strenuous on the components.
Either way you go, I would suggest going with a 4300k HID kit for the brightest possible output.

As per your questions:
1) Your vehicle uses the high beam bulb for the DRL meaning that upgrading your low beams to HID would have no effect on your high beams.
2) You are correct about not being able to flash if you were to upgrade your high beams to HID. If you are planning on upgrading your high beams to HID you would need to be aware of these 2 things:
- You would need to deactivate your DRL.
- You cannot use your high beams to flash anyone once you have upgraded them to HID as it would strenuous on the components.
Either way you go, I would suggest going with a 4300k HID kit for the brightest possible output.

damn thats some pretty bad glare, you're guaranteed to be blinding people.
when it comes to HID, i highly recommend doing it right or not doing it at all (no offense to chinese kit sellers/users but that just isnt cool to fellow drivers)
Very nice writeup though. And I agree that around 4300k is the best (brightest) color temp. the very most I would go is 6000k (borderlining on stunna mode)

nice write up... i have an 11' accord ex sedan and had used ddmtuning.com for my nissan altima coupe foglights and they were also a plug and play kit... very easy to install and these look easy as well except for getting your hands behind the drivers side light... but this makes me want to upgrade my low beams to hid now...

installed my ddm kit, actually quite easy to install without removing the bumper, just removed the wheel with the side i was working on and removed the clips and screw to pull back the wheelwell cover and installed. there are already pre-drilled holes in the metal frame which arent being used, so i mcgyver'd some zipties of my own tie down the ballast safely and securely. the 5000k were spot on for stock looking hid. i might replace the highbeams with luminics jdm yellow bulbs or piaa ion yellow for a distictive day/dusk look. but all in all... took less than 2 hours to install the hid lights (i was taking my sweet time on sunday since it was so nice out) probably could of had it done in an hour if i rushed.
i do have some advice though if u upgrade your lights to hid and have an alarm system AND use your Auto-On function.... i would recommend that you always shut your lights to the OFF position. Because i noticed that with my alarm system (auto mate, w/remote start) that at night when i go to unlock my car... it flashes the headlights and if i left the headlights to Auto-On and its already dark out.. it will flash the low beams... which would be HID... and that would kill the life of the hid bulbs to be flashed on and off like that. So to rectify that problem I just always have the lights off and i dont use the auto-on function. This might just be my issue because of the specific type of alarm i have. but its no big deal. i had hid lights in my nissan altima coupe and used the auto on function... but i didnt have an alarm in the car.. just keyless entry so i never had the flashing issue.. beacuse only the parking lights flashed on and off.
