I think the stock battery is warranted for 3 year free replacement, and pro-rated after that. Check the warranty information that came with the car. I think 5 years on the oem battery is doing pretty good, most don't last that long. Sure, you can buy a battery that will probably last longer, but of course it will cost more. Optima? No way. I'm sure they're good batteries, but not for that price. I just bought a Duralast Gold from Autozone ($95).

4 years is within normal acceptable battery life. It's slightly on the short side, but not abnormal. Operating conditions play a large role in battery life; your mother is likely more demanding on the battery than others.

Haha, what? Why should the battery be warrantied after that kind of time? There are a million ways you could drain the battery so why should it be warrantied?

I wouldnt be worried about Honda's battery, Mine gave out on me after 3 years also. I would say its normal if you have other electrical hookups connected to your battery or excessive use of the battery while the car is off. ie: radio use, fan, etc. I would suggest getting a rechargeable battery like optima or braille batteries, they have good reviews and feedback from customers and are pretty damn good battery and can be rechargeable.
