What can cause the rear main seal to fail?
I took my wife's car to the dealer for the timing belt replacement and the 90K service. The day after we got it back, there was oil dripping from near the transmission. I thought it was ATf. We took it back to have them look at it, and they said is was the rear main seal. Is there any way that they could have caused this problem when they changed the timing belt?
I think that they damaged the seal when they did the service, but I can't prove it. Any thoughts?
Thanks, -gshock

I bet it wasn't the mechanic. The PCV valve can clog, causing the seals to leak. The PCV valve vents blowby gases from the oil pan, and if it clogs, the gas will blow your seals. The PCV valve is like $4 at any auto parts store, so you should be able to replace it. See if that diminishes your issue; unfortunately, there's not an easy way to completely fix this without dropping the transmission.

If the valve is fixed and it reduces the problem, they'll still have to replace the seals too, right? They'll still leak, won't they? Like you said, the only way to completely fix this problem is to get in through the tranny, so it's still a $600 job no matter what, right?

Item #4 in this image; it is installed at the factory with a sealer [hondabond etc.]
and the 'O'ring gets brittle after many heat and cool cycles of the engine.
However the transmission does need to be removed to inspect the area to determine the Exact cause of the leakage.
