As Phootbag mentioned, you'll have to start with the Range Selector switch mounted to your console's shifter mechanism. You're fortunate (of sorts), these normally fail in such a way that the "Park" lamp never comes on and you can't get the key out!

Honda part # 35700-SM4-A92 1992 EX Auto / Federal

That will get you started

Before you replace the range switch, was the "D" indicator blinking or on solid?

Verify the fluid is within the has marks when the car is on level ground.
6th gen Civic AT dipsticks were built wrong and are VERY loose in the case, easily noticeable as the engine bay is usually pretty oily down by the dipstick.

If the fluid is full, and you have not have regular fluid changed, the sump filter may be impacted with friction material and sludge blocking flow. This is usually accompanied by howling or whirring sound coming from the torque converter area. This is the AT pump cavitating.
You may try draining and refilling the trans to remove the sludge, but when it gets this bad the filter is usually in need of replacement. This is not accessible without removing the trans to open the case.
