Default Timing Belt Replacement 98 4cyl

I am going to replace the timing belt on my 98 4cyl Accord. I would like to know what else I should replace at this time. Currently the car stands at 98k miles and runs strong.

I would like to replace the belts, and water pump. What seals should I replace? Any other thoughts or suggestions while I'm doing this replacement? Is there a DIY on this as well?

Also what manual do you guys recommend for this, Haynes, Bentley, etc? I have done a few belt swaps before so from looking at this model it seems very easy and accessible and should be about a 4-hour job.

Helm publishes the GOOD book for Hondas (www.helminc.com); kinda like Bently does for VW/Audi/etc. But it seems like even the cheap Haynes/Chilton books are sorta OK for timing belt. They're sorta lacking for some other details.

Read the timing belt section so you understand what all the timing marks look like, BEFORE you take off the old belts. I think the rear balancer shaft is held with a pin, so there's no actual timing MARK.

The bolt holding the crankshaft pulley is a $$^% to remove. There's a tool for holding the crank, it engages the big internal hex in the pulley. Otherwise use a big air-impact wrench.

It's an interference engine, so while the belt is off, be careful about spinning the engine so you don't hit the pistons into the valves.

Timing belt
Balancer-shaft belt
Water pump *
Tensioner pulleys for each belt *

* these may or may not last another 90k miles, so get 'em now if you don't feel lucky. Depends on your tolerance for repeating the labor in a year or so.

My opinion is not to replace the seals if they're not leaking. Many people will disagree, so make up your own mind.

That's my opinion too. Unless it's a grungy engine, then I replace em.

What happened to me is having to replace a waterpump within a year after doing the timing belt. I was the one who decided not to replace the pump at the same time, so I sucked it up & couldn't blame anyone else for my decision. You gotta make your decision & live with it.

</TD></TR></TABLE>Mine have been pretty good about not leaking oil. YMMV.
