[QUOTE=Targa250R;37273177]I've never seen nor heard of an F-series that didn't bend valves after a broken belt, and I've seen a lot of broken belts. I've seen a number of supposedly "interference" engines that dodged the bullet, but never an F22 or F23. Odds are that you've bent some valves. You can often tell just by checking some clearances under the valve cover.

With 170,000 miles on the clock, it's often a better move to just put a complete used engine in it.

Never seen an F22 survive a timing belt failure? and where do you work again? Anyway I posted a while back about my '95 Accord I got from my neighbor for free with a broken timing belt. Long story short I installed a new timing belt and the engine runs perfectly smooth and has plenty of power... Did I mention it has 375,000 miles on the engine...? The engine is an F22B1 VTEC.

I really hate it when people say "oooh your engine's at 170K, or 200K... so its "junk"". It all depends on how you take care of it- NOT how many miles it has. Theoretically an engine will last forever given worn parts are replaced and maintenance is continued. Both of my accords have over 200,000 ('91 was at 228,000 before the rebuild, and the '95 is at 378,000 miles now). The '95 accord at 378,000 miles is my daily driver- a compression test on the engine revealed the bores were pushing 180 PSI easily. An engine is only as good as the owner who takes care of it!

My 2 cents- take it or leave it

Accordinthemaking is right completely. There is honda's that have tripped over 1,000,000 miles. I mean if you do not have any faith in the engine and feel so compelled to put that much extra money downon a brand new engine, then by all means go ahead. But how much is a timing belt, like thirty bucks plus or minus. Might as well try it.

Oh and PS:

If you dont want that "old" junker engine with the broken timing belt that you have- I'll gladly take it.... I could use another good runner! Bottom line- try and fix it! Whats the worst that could happen? Its already broken, it can only get better or just stay broken! :p Just make sure you get that last cylinder running... or at least disconnect the fuel injector on the dead cylinder untill you do fix it the right way.

-Good luck!

Putting a F22b1 in would be pretty simple, just install it. Find a ecu for 97 accord with F22b1 vtec. You will need to run to wires one for the VTEC solenoid, and one for the VTEC pressure switch from the ECU, and one ground.

I'm confused. My brother say it will cost over a grand to fix it. If so, shouldn't I just get a new motor anyways, since my engine has a leak in the spark plug place (don't really know what it's called) and it is now filled with oil. Will changing the engine cost as much as fixing the timing belt?

What would make the fix cost over $1000? That's more than twice as much as another engine. How is my brother able to still drive around?

my timin belt broke right before christmas..i got over 200,000 miles on my car and after all the work i got done to it, it runs like its new. when i got my timin belt changed, i also replaced other belts and also new water pump. after that, it cost me 150. once the belts and water pump was changed out, he crunk it up and it wasnt runnin right. come to find out, wen my timin belt broke, i didnt stop! i pressed the gas a couple times and bent some valves! So now i had to get a head job! that set me back 800 but its worth it. mechanic takes head out and sends it to a machine shop to get it rebuilt and u can also get it ported for more horsepower. once the head is rebuilt, u can feel a BIG differnce wen u drive it. u get horsepower back as well ur torque and youll even get another 200,000 miles out the engine! my 95 vtec is my baby!!!

Your timing belt broke, did you ever replaced it? What was the time and mileage interval from your last timing belt change if it indeed was changed at all? My car has 131000 miles on it and it was changed once at around 90000 I think from the previous owner. He had a written maintenace record but no receipt though.
If you had it serviced then your belt must have broke prematurely. What would be the cause of a premature timing breaking?
Thanks.

Some of my friends with Hondas said that the car would be sluggish before the timing belt is about to go, wonder if that is true. My car is only 132K and it's a 1990 LX. I know it got changed out once, should I be worry about it now?
Thanks.

yea u need to go ahead and get it done asap...my car was also runnin sluggish before it broke. it was runnin very sluggish. while the belts are getting changed, go ahead and do the water pump while u at it. cause when the belts are off, the water pump is right there visible!

Your engine will NOT run rough even if your timing belt is about to fail. So long as the belt did not loosen to the point of jumping teeth, you wont notice anything untill it goes. Even a bad worn out belt still holds its clearances tight to the cam and crank pulleys. Timing belts dont stretch what-so-ever.. even old ones. They just work untill they snap!

Chances are if your engine ran rough before you replaced the timing belt, and then ran better after, you had other problems that were "accidently" resolved by doing the timing belt maintenance (such as re-checking the valve timing with the new belt, adjusting accesory drive belts, etc.). Timing belts can last a long time before they fail... my '95 accord's belt finally failed at 375,000 miles due to the lady that drove it before i got the car for free after the damage was already done (apparently the previous owner did have a new Honda OEM belt installed at one point, but it was early in the cars life- around 90K, and had never been done again until it broke on her at 375K :0 ). -Not to say you should delay changing your belt though. If your belt breaks while driving (prefferably at a low RPM) and you push the clutch in IMMEDIATLY you can luck out like I did on my car. If you dont push the clutch in, the rotating wheels will transfer the rotational energy back to the crank and keep the engine turning over and can bend a few valves- because the cam obviously is NOT moving and the crank is, and on an interfernce engine this means you will certainly encounter interference! no pun intended.

Anyway people change your timing belts! Its not that hard, and it doesnt cost much if you do it on your own.

I would guess that I am ok for while since my car is 132K miles now and the belt was changed once already, mostly likely at 60k or 90k.
Thanks.

Dude just go to an auto salvage yard or get someone to go to pull apart for a b2 head and slap that head on. It's way cheaper.
