Hey guys,

I noticed Fram now has Oil filters rated for Synthetic Oil too. They are about $10 more than economy filters. Are they really worth it?

Its not just the money, I have to drive to this shop really outta my way, plus I have three cars......blah blah....... Just wondering if the extra effort is worth it. Thanks.

Well since you don't list your car, I'll assume it is a Bugatti Veyron. So yes in that instance the extra $10 is worth it.


If you're driving a 100k+ mile 94-97 Accord with maintenance done sparingly and are running synthetic for some unknown reason then I would say you're throwing your money away.

Thanks for replies guys. No its not Veyron :-) Thats next year.

This year I have 99 V6 Accord. About 90k. I know I know, studies say synthetic may not make much difference. But I am up in Ontario. Lots of cold starts.

Glad you took the post in stride.

You want to make sure you always post what vehicle you have when you make a post. There's almost a new post every day with Civics, Integras, etc in the Accord section which is why I joke on it.

If you do have cold starts, you may see some benefit, personally, I have just used Mobil 1 filters or OEM Honda filters. Both are much better than Fram. Mostly just keeping up on the oil changes and fluid intervals will help your motor out.

What synthetic oil are you using? And what weight?

You are right, it seems Fram is not the way to go. Tough Guard sits on the fence. But like you said, I will surely stay away from regular Fram.....synthetic oil or not.

Yeah, the Mobil 1 "synthetic" isn't a full true synthetic oil, so you're fine using it. If you wanted a full switch and keep Mobil 1, the Extended Performance performs MUCH better in tests.

Just do a quick google search on Mobil 1 synthetic and you'll see what I mean.

I wanted to throw a question in here. I've been told not to run synthetic in my H22 as the normal 10w30 is just fine. I dont really know the reasoning behind it being told to me but can anyone substantiate this?

Great link rival12. I used to use NAPA/WIX filters then I started just using stock Honda. The Accord had 141,900 last weekend when I sold it. I ran Valvoline SynBlend most of the time. I put about 3k a month mostly highway on my car, so it never got very dirty.

Running part synthetic, I'd change the filter between 3-4k miles and then do a full change in another 3-4k miles.

There really is not a reason to run it after the motor has already been broken in and been using regular for x number of years. You're just spending the extra $20 an oil change.

Now, for example on my newer car, it had low miles and motor was not near as old, I switch to synthetic since the "damage" hadn't already been done.

If you're not having issues using dino oil there isn't a reason to switch to the high mileage oils (additives that swell up the seals) or synthetic

This is what I use:

Civic w/ DOHC ZC gets Synthetic. Mobil 1 - 10W30. This Past Oil Change I used Castrol Syntec 10W30. Seems to be good so far. I use K&N Filters. 9$/piece. I put about 5000 Kilometers per year on that car, so it sees one oil change per year. It's mainly an Auto cross car. That engine gets abuse.

Accord w/H22 gets Regular Motor Oil. Castrol 5w30. Oil Changes every 3K. Oil comes out clean. I also use K&N filters on this car, I'm really impressed with them, and they get good reviews.

If you change your oil constantly. You shouldn't need high-end filters. If you wait 10-12K between oil changes you may want to invest in a quality filter.

MM....you're creating too many problems from me. First I cannot buy Fram, now you tell you Mobil 1 is not full synthetic. Darn it.....you're right. Still reading, so much info. All these years I was throwing my beer money lol.

Rival.....Looked up K&N. Up here in Canada they are $16. And our dollar is almost same as yours. But reading the site you gave it seems spending few more dollars is definitly worth it. So yeah going with K&N.

Btw, how's Honda's Filter?

I've heard mixed things on Honda Filters....Depending where the filter was made....or where it was contracted through. I can't comment on Honda Filters, i haven't used them in......5 years.

I use Amsoil 5W30 with a Napa Gold (made by Wix) and change my oil and filter at around 12,000 miles. I've done this for about a 150,000 total miles on EACH car for 4 of my previous vehicles. I have experienced NO oil related problems on any them. I won't be changing my s.o.p (standard operating procedure). I have done a compression test on all of these cars and the test results are great, and fuel mileage has not diminished and cam lobes show VERY little wear.

I think the best value in filters is the Purolator PureOne.. I been using it for a few years now and it does its job... It also supposedly has a synthetic filter media if thats what you are interested in...

Two for $11.30 is pretty good.. Most parts places sell it for $6.50 here in the US

However, unfortunately for you, everything in canada seems to regularly be 50% more and yourl havent quite gotten the concept of online shopping yet..

Duh...Santa is Canadian. Border crossing has also become strict....they asked to see his cell phone, and he told them where to go.....it wasn't the north pole ahaha.

I've had decent luck with Honda filters. All of the ones that I've had have been manufactured by a company called "Filtech". I've never cut one apart, but the oil seems to stay clean.

I did have one (either NAPA Gold or Honda, I don't remember exactly) that had a bad gasket on it (had visibly leaked out and drained down the back of the engine on my Accord, and that time it wasn't the oil cooler o-ring).

I, too, feel like I was just told that Santa isn't real with the news about Mobil1... I drive mostly highway so I didn't use it all the time because of the price, but I have used it on occasion.
