Default Strange Engine noise when Accelerating.

My Car is an older one (91) it has about 200k on the engine right now.
which isn't too bad for a Honda hehe, Anyway..

when I accelerate..or when I give it a lot of gas I hear a strange noise coming from the engine.
almost like a crackling sound it's hard to describe this sound to anyone who hasn't heard it.
but it only makes the noise when I give the car a lot of gas, such as getting on the highway or coming out of a stop light.

I really have no idea what is making this noise, anyone have any idea what might be causing it or know the noise I am talking about? If I could record the sound and play it back for you I would hehe.

I know I can take it to Honda, but they want 100 bucks just to tell me what the noise is.

If you want to pay my travel expenses, I'll come take a listen (I made it to Fort Leonard Wood in two days! )

But seriously (and this is only a guess) Octain Ping or exhaust leak

Is there an easy way to test either of those?

What would cause on octane ping??

I can replace the gasket on the header, I suppose I don't think it is leaking anywhere down the tube.

Carbon build-up is the common culprit when it comes to "ping"; and basically it can either cause an increase in compression, or form hot spots, of which both cause detonation ( uncontrolled ignition )
Going to a higher octain gas will mask the condition (and is often used to test for the condition as well, but to correctly address it, you use a product called Sea Foam (which is mentioned in many of these threads) or any commercially available de-carboning agent (GM offers one thru their parts division)

A potato, or any other available item which can be stuffed in the tailpipe while the engine runs will readily make apparent any leak you've got.

Awesome advice.
I will look into them both, I assume the seafoam can be used without having to rip the motor apart?

the potato sounds technical hehe. Sorry bout not looking thru the threads for the info. There are a ton of threads and I wouldn't have a clue where to start looking.
Thanks again

True enough on the Sea Form; it's ment to be injected (inhaled) thru the air intake system. I personally have not used this particular product, but traditionally its either sucked in thru a vacume hose or sprayed in thru the throttle body. I'm quite sure that if my responce isn't accurate enough, someone will chime in with their experiences.
GM's product comes with instructions, I'm quite sure Sea Form does as well.

Not a problem with the "search" statement. Unless you're familiar with "key words", a search in a forum like this can be daunting.

Oh, don't forget to use a Metric Potato

Here's a long shot, but here I go. It could be your heat shield that separates the exhaust manifold from the rest of the engine. There is also a second heat shield on the driver side of the exhaust manifold. If one of the bolts came loose or the heat shield is broken then it will shake real bad while you accelerate. It's like a metal sound clanking or banging on your engine. It sounds just like it's coming from your engine. Good luck.

dockersguy has a point as well; however, what I usually find is that the heat shields (and in some applications the exhaust intermediate pipe) respond to a resonant vibration from the engine at aproximately 2000 rpm. They make a most irritateing buzz (or humm) most times from 1900 to 2100 rpm either accelerating or decellerating.
An octain ping will sound as though your engine is trying to digest marbles, and occures only under load.

I have heard both good and bad things about seafoam on Hondas but I know the dealership has a particular carbon destroyer they use so ask them. It would not hurt to use it even if carbon buildup isn't the problem. The engine is a little old so it should be good for it. If it stops problem solved, if not keep searching, no damage done.
