So Im having some problems with my starter lately, it usually only happens when the engine is really cold, but its been getting worse lately...

basically when i go to start the car i can hear the starter spinning but the engine wont crank, usually if i try again everythings fine but sometimes it'll do it again...

its a 95 lx 5mt and im just wondering if its a simple fix or it needs a new starter, or maybe even a flywheel, any help is appreciated thanks

It could be either. The starter may not be extending out enough or at all when it's cold. Or you may be missing some teeth on the starter or the flywheel. My guess would be the starter is just sticking because of the temperature.

Had this happen. Well not at cold. But I hear the starter motor spinning, but wouldn't engage the flywheel. So I tested it at autozone, the gear on the starter, was coming out slowly. So I just went ahead and replaced the starter. That's mostly likely the same thing for you.

It's not too hard to remove. Disconnect battery terminals.
Two bolts hold it to the tranny. One nut for the large positive wire (getting it back on can be alittle frustrating).
Small wire with female connection.
I removed to rubber intake pipe and had just enough room to work in there.

When I was taking it out, to make it easier, I removed the lower radiator hose, the intake pipe. Also the battery. It's kinda annoying how the A/C line is in the way, so you have to find a certain angle and tilt the starter to get it out.

As m735i said, 2 bolts holding, 1 bolt holding the positive wire and a small little wire. Pull back the boot and pull on the wire. It might take a little force.
