Rust problem. Stainless steel fender trim kit for 1995 accord. Anybody has experience with it?
So my accord started rusting the winter after i bought it 2 years ago. The preveous owner kept the car in the garage so it had no rust at all before i bought it.
There is a lot of salt and sand on the roads wher i live. Here is how it looks now
The front wheel wells look perfectly fine!
So, i noticed that some people install Stainless steel fender trim to protect wheel weels from rusting and contact with salt during winter. Here is the picture how it looks like:
So i was thinking of installing steel fender trim on the rear fenders. I can get trim kit for 95 accord for 4 wells for $70 shipped..
Do these kits actually help (do they slow down the rusting process)? Does salt and moisture get behind the trim? How hard is the installation process, Does it require drilling the fender?
What other things can i do to fight the rust during this coming winter? (for now im planning washing the car (including undercarriage) every weekend.)
It is so sad to see my otherwise great accord slowly rusting...
Thank you in advance.

I dont think it will slow down the rust as much as just hiding it but rust along the rear fender well is commen on most honda cars after a while. Im 100% sure ur notthe only one on this site that has that problem. In my opinion unless ur just trying to hide it the trim kit wont help much if at all.

may i make a suggestion?.
just sand off the rusty part lightly till smooth then just go to your local honda dealer and get the color code of your car and get some touch up paint for a mear 4-8 dollars. my friend did it to his 94 lx. and it came out very nice...only difference with his car was the rust was so bad that there was a whole in the body above the rear wheel well. so he had to use bondo.
i dont recommend using those chrome fender trim. the rust will still happen. rain dripping between the fender trim and body itself...the rust process might slow down a bit, but wont stop it.
good luck man.

Well, don't do it and here the reason why
1)it will not stop the rust
2)after you apply the chrome trim, the salt and water will most likely to trapped inbetween the gaps, without a way to get rid of it, it will only promote new rust.
3)ultra eyesore
if you plan to keep the car for bit more time, grind it down to bare metal and do some body work on it, not saying it's the most cost effecientive way but it's the only way to stop rust.

Yeah, that trim is just going to hold the water in and make it rust 10x as fast.
I think most people who do that crap do it for looks....and it looks crappy

Alright. Thanks for your comments. I'll talk to my body shop about sanding it down and using some paint to "temporarily fix" the problem. Im just afraid that by the next summer it'll be even worse..
p.s. i also think that the trim will only trap salt and water and make it rust only faster.

You could spend a couple of hundred dollars and do it right. The fix may only take a few hours, a few different products to ensure that the metal around gets to be cleaned up properly, preventing to happen to that spot.
After you get the area repaired, be sure to spray some undercoat (normally in black, dries quick, reduces road noise, and protects the area sprayed from chips, small rocks and rust as well)
