hey i just got my timing belt and water pump changed as well as drive belts including power steering and a/c belt changed to brand new oem ones

after this install when i start the car it squeels/whine sound happens on idle and mostly under 2000 rpm but goes away after i start driving

two mechanics have told me it will go away after a couple months of driving. \any opinions??

They may have not properly tightened the belts.

I also have a squeel on my belt (alternator belt) that just appeared overnight. I think its because its dried out and old, I did try tightening it but it did not help.

What do you think?

To the OP yeah its probably too loose (or too tight?)

OP, Take off the power steering belt and see if the squeal goes away. If it does, there's your culprit. If not, it's the alternator, compressor belt. Check the tightness of the belt. Adjust from there.

i'm a newbie to the mechanics, but will it only go away if i get someone to tighten one of the drive belts, or are they correct about it going away after sometime :S?

What year is the car. I only ask because I just replaced all the belts and pump in mine. I have had to tighten the Alt belt 4 times now, And the PS belt twice. Tighten it drive it for a few days and then I will get a squeal, check them and they are a little loose again. I think it is just the belt needs time to stretch some, just started to squeal after the forth time I have tightened it but this time its not as loud and doesnt last as long, only when I first fire it up. Im thinking after I tighten it one more time it should be good, I have checked all bolts to make sure it wasnt backing out somehow and they are all good.
Will it just go away by itself, NO. Would be nice if that was the case but no car company has produced a car that fixes itself yet.
With the car OFF put your hand down in there and feel it, if there is a lot of "bounce" or flex then its to lose. You want to press on the longest straight part of the belt between two pulleys. Should be fairly tight but should be able to twist it about 90 degrees. If the belts are tight look for a mis aligned belt and or a pulley or maybe a small rock or dirt in some of the groves in the pulleys.

its a 2002 4 cyl coupe.

and by when i said would it fix itself i meant in terms of would the car need to be driven to "break" in the new belts.
The two belts p/s and alternator belt are quite tight when pressed on.

I changed the belts/timing and pump on saturday so i've only driven the car about 250 kms (130 miles ?) since the fix.

on the longest side of the the p/s and alternator belt, in the middle of that side, twist it with your fingers. You should only be able to twist it 90 degrees, if you can twist it more than that it's too loose.

What brand is the belt? I did this job on my '98 recently. Used Dayco belts from Advance Auto but it still squeaks at startup. I tightened it once, will do again, but it seems pretty tight to me. I will buy a different brand next time (lol, there won't BE a next time on this car)

Those are all the items which were changed.


The p/s belt moves to 90 degrees maybe a few degrees more. ( on a side note, on our 96 accord that p/s belt moves moves to early 110 or so degrees and no squeel at all).
