Default Speedometer

Hey everyone, made a post awhile back and tried some stuff without any luck, seeing if some fresh minds can step in.

1996 Accord EX 5spd Coupe

Speedometer will fluctuate and go all over the place and sometimes just chill at 0, when it's at 0 the odometer does not work either.

I have replaced the VSS (new from honda), removed the cluster and checked the wiring, everything there looks fine, now most of the time it works fine without any problems whatsoever. But it seems random when this occurs.

I believe someone earlier mentioned that the digital to analog converter or something along those lines could be the problem? Or should I just replace the actual speedometer? All help is appreciated.

The car's cruise control works fine even if the speedometer is gunked up and moving around or at 0, so that would rule out the VSS and my installation and put the blame on what component? Any Suggestions?

my friend with a 94 lx has a simular problem that I am trying to find out myself. I am thinking it might be a short in the cluster, but really am chaseing at straws. The cluster also uses a electro magnet to move the needles instead of the cables. I am woundering if that could be messed up some how. Either way I am thinking it is most likely in the cluster.

At some point someone suggested something like a analog to digital converter but I haven't the foggiest where that's located, I'm wondering if it'd just be easiest to swap out the cluster?

most likely it would be easyist to just swap it, the converter is most of the times in the ecm, but it might be in the cluster it self, but I am not sure. I wouldn't doubt if it is in the cluster, just dont know.

next time it happens wack the cluster and see if it will bring it back. If it does you know its something with the cluster. Do the RPMs work when the speedo's off?

Yeah, rpm's are 100% fine, that's how I'm sure the cruise is still working and going the same speed. It's solely the speedo and it doesn't seem like I'll do anything in particular to have it start acting up, it just does it on occassion lol.

I had the same problem when i first got my 93 accord. What i ended up having to do is change the cluster and good luck finding one if it's a stick i had to look for about a month or so.

Been doing some research on a similar problem I have with a '91 Accord. Last March, Speedometer became erratic, finally stopped working period. Changhed the speed sensor, seemed to fix the problem. Almost at the same time it developed some shifing problems, changed the Main computer and the SCU, (SCU fixed the shift problem). Shortly after all that I noticed the Speedometer would sometimes not settle to "0" when at a complete stop. Tach and cruise work fine, speed is screwed up, I have to get up to 3K on the tach to register 60 and I'm passing everybody! Anyway looking to see what experience you may of had that might be some help. I'm thinking speed sensor again, maybe cluster, ideas?

I had that same issue about 4 years ago. There's a tiny spring inside the gauge cluster that went bad, and would cause all kinds of erratic reading on the speedo. I went to a junk yard and purchased a spare cluster, and transfered the speedo parts to mine to make sure the mileage was not affected. It worked like a charm and no problems since.

Good luck.
