Solenoid Issue

Solenoid Issue
Hey guys,
I have gotten the D4 blinking light and did the jumper thing to get the code 7 TCM which indicates solenoid. My question is, where exactly is it? I can see two sets of them just looking past the radiator, but I don't know which set controls 2nd gear which is the one that my car skips past when driving. I can't manually put it in 2nd gear either.

I believe if i remember correctly, the top solenoid is the shift solenoid, and the bottom is the lock up. Take them off, clean then and the plugs (clean the plugs with electrical parts cleaner in an aresol can) re install them and then do a fluid change. Worked for me and a few friends.
Just a note. If you check the fluid and it is a really dark red, like brown and sinks. Don't change the fluid. Replace or rebuild the transaxle. That brown color is all of the clutch plate particles that have worn out. If you change the fluid, it washes the particles out causing your transaxle to not function.

Re: Solenoid Issue
Ok the weirdest thing happened today.
I cranked it and the D4 did not blink even once while doing errands. It did however fail to change from 1st to 2nd until I backed way off the throttle. It would run fine unless I pushed gas too much. I kept it in D4 and it went through all 4 gears very late. I checked fluid and it appears light brown and doesn't smell and is at appropriate levels.
What does it sound like now?

Well the light brown is an indication that the clutch plates are gone. No smell just means you haven't burnt the transaxle yet. Rebuild it. Its toast

Re: Solenoid Issue
With the code 7 that is solenoid A.
The shift solenoids are the two that are on the front facing side of the transmission, these are solenoids A + B. You can easily check if these work, with the car off, unplug the grey solenoid connector, use a jumper wire from the + batt terminal to the solenoid plug and make sure that they click. If they do then there may be an issue with the wiring to the solenoids. Check for damage to the wiring or corrosion at the connector. The two upper solenoids are for lockup function IIRC.
Brown fluid doesn't necessarily mean the trans is shot. It is most likely that friction material is suspended in the fluid, but by no means is the transmission on its last legs.
With the H4A it doesn't have a typical transmission 'filter' which is usually a fine screen mesh backed with a fabric material. It is a small screen that can be clogged with a buildup of sludge that can accumulate if the fluid is not changed regularly.
At the very least, drain the transmission, clean the magnetic plug and refill.
I'm of the belief that when the H4A becomes sludged up the transmission begins the failure mode of working for two or three minutes but then goes into a neural state, wait a few minutes the sludge unclogs the port and the pump can work again.
