Hello everyone,

My gf currently drives a 2000 LX V6 pass-me-down from her dad who just got a new G-35. The car has 139k miles on it and it is experiencing transmission problems. Yes, I am a noob, but I am not completely new to this topic. I know that 6th gen Accord trannies tend to give out after 100k miles. Since this car is out of warranty (3/36 and the 7/100 for the tranny) I am looking for information to prepare myself for the upcoming tranny breakdown (?). This car was an Original Owner car and to my knowledge the tranny has been serviced at least 3 times. The last time being at 125k, a full flush was done and 10 quarts of fluid were used (have the paperwork). The fluid looks clear and red and lacks metallic particles when looked at.

The problem:
The car has rough shifts that have been going on for at least 10k miles, hence the reason her dad purchased himself a new car. Shift 1-2 is rather rough and there is a little bit of slippage. You can also feel the 2-3 and 3-4 shift which are less rough than the 1-2 but not normal. Her dad was told that a rebuild might be necessary where as I have heard some info that it might just need a solenoid pack and or that it might be an electrical problem.
From your experiences does this sound like the regular 1/2 clutch failure?? I have experienced clutch failures before, there was pronounced slippage followed by a loss of gears. This car on the other hand seems to have rough shifts only.

Also what are the replacement/rebuild costs for this tranny. A pal of mine works for a tranny shop and he tells me that he can give me a deal at 2600-2800 with a 12yr 12mo warranty where as others charge 4000. I have not done extensive research on that topic just yet so I don't know if it is a good deal or not. And for all that matters I am located in California.

This may not be the answer to the questions you asked but.Have you looked into just buying another transmission for the car.Ive heard that it's usaully cheaper to replace then to rebuild a trans

Greenleaf wants $1600 shipped which in my opinion is too much for perhaps a flawed tranny without a warranty that i'm going to put in myself.

Well if its slipping most likely the clutches going out as your mentioned. Best bet is to find a refurbished tranny already rebuilt. You could also send in your tranny to get it rebuilt but im not sure how much they would charge for it.

Contact Your local Honda Dealership first thing Monday and inform them that you've a 2000 V6 Accord with an Automatic shifting problem.
Honda extended the Warranty coverage on "Certain 2000 and 2001 Accords and Odysseys for shifting issues to 100k.
Although you say it may be outside the warranty period, There have been three incidents here in the last month where Honda either picked up all or 50% of the cost of a new Transmission.
You may find it cheaper (and a better warranty) than having it repaired.

Thanks for that hint, I just think it is going to be highly unlikely that a dealer will cut 2000 of his profit and pay $2000 for a tranny. I will give them a call Monday, it can't hurt to try.

Just called the dealer... They referred me to 1800-999-1009, he also told me keep records handy to prove that the car was well maintained. Which could be a problem since the oil changes were done by her dad without any receipts... but tranny services should be on record. I guess I will have to wait and see how it goes.

That's the spirit! And the good news is that you won't be cheesing off your dealer since the adjustment will come from Honda. The Dealer contributes nothing.
It's well worth the shot; and who knows....thirty minutes looking at the 2006 Civic (or Accord) might give your dealer a warm fuzzy feeling about your car sitting on his lift.

If you decide to get it done at honda and you don't know anyone that can cut you a deal, it'll rn you anywhere from 3.8K to about 5K to get the trans done. If you go to an independent shop, it will cost you between 2.1K and 3.8K.

I would go to a trans specialty shop before I go to the dealer in this case.

That kinda' goes without saying. My point was that it wouldn't hurt to query Honda about participating. And between you and me, I'd rather have Honda's latest example (New) between my axles that any Indy re-hash, any day.
And if I could get it for less than I'd have to pay at (say) Cottman or Aamco Transmissions, so much the better!

Thanks for those tips guys, I was actually looking for an approximate to repair the tranny, 3.8-5k from the dealer sounds about accurate, I guess I'll have to check out a few indy shops after calling honda on monday as well. You guys think the car should be driven until the tranny breaks completely? If they are going to be replacing/rebuilding the thing anyways I don't see the harm, yet my friend at the tranny shop advised against it.

His advice is well placed. As it stands right now, the only things most likely effected are clutches, some seals and other such stuff which screws up from clutch debris circulating thru the Tranny.
The possibility exists that additional failure could occure with would damage "Hard Parts" (IE: Clutch Housings, Bearing Carriers, Bearings etc, etc, etc.
The repair costs would go thru the roof.
