Rear Main Seal Leak
Is a car still drivable with a rear main seal leak? Of course I would keep an eye on the oil but I may need to drive the car around temporarily like that until I can fix it.

Re: Rear Main Seal Leak
Correct, the rear main seal for the motor oil. It's located at the end of the crankshaft where it bolts onto the flywheel.
It's a bitch to get to, but it's easy as cake to replace once you're in there. Plus the main seal is like $3.00 from any auto parts store haha.
You can drive it while it leaks but eventually it'll leak more and more until you're pouring a quart of oil in the morning, on your lunch break, and after you leave work. Speaking from first hand experience, of course.

basically just a matter of getting the transmission out of the way to get to it huh? thanks a lot. this really helps. i am actually trying to pick this car up today and drive it home but the guy selling it told me he wouldn't recommend me driving it home because of the leak.

He just wants you to pay to have it fixed 'cause it's a lot. It sits in the middle of the engine and transmission. When you take off the transmission it's attached to the engine.
