go buy a service manual

there's a plug on the bottom of the trans, passenger side. use a 3/8" ratchet to remove it. clean the gunk off the plug, refill with honda ATF Z-1 through the dipstick hole (long black funnel from walmart is the best I've found for this)

drive the car a few miles, drain and fill again to your hearts desire...

I did 2 drain and fills on my sisters 94....fluid came out pretty clean on the 2nd drain, so I didnt go for a 3rd. fluid is still clean on the dipstick 6k miles later...

I really need to do it, my tranny doesnt want to shift sometimes, it will go up high in the rpms, then do a hard shift.

No matter how slow I drive, and accelerate smoothly, I can still feel that shift, I think that means I better freakin flush it.

How many quarts per drain and refil? 3-4 right?

Its the dipstick thats kinda hard to get to on the front/passenger side of the engine, its yellow or orange, right?

you'll always feel the shift, and I'm glad I can. The 5th gen accords have somewhat rough automatic shifts and they're known for it. Doesn't mean it's bad quality, it's just how they are. I'm not saying you don't need a change.
Have you looked at the color of the fluid? It should be a somewhat transparent red/rose color. Look for brown color and flakes/debris which will tell you it really needs a fluid change.
Also, read the dipstick when it's warmed up, unlike motor oil, but yes it's down there by the bottom of the tranny.

heh yeah, it doesn't help that it's right by the radiator hose and ****. Best to drive the car then let it cool down for 5 or 10 mins maybe. At least you'll only sear your hand off instead of your whole arm.

I checked my fluid, it has a little bit of a burnt smell to it, its not bad at all, barley noticable, its a reddish brown color.. I think I should change it, right?'

Also, no one has answered it yet,

HOW MANY QUARTS PER REFILL?

The 4-cyl auto tranny holds over 6 quarts but only about 2.5 drains out. That's the reason for multiple drain/fills. M1ndless says his smells burnt, but for the rest of you... if the first drain comes out clean & doesn't smell, I wouldn't bother doing more.

Mine doesnt really smell that burnt, it looks like newer oil, its not black or anything..

So for 2 drain and refils, I should get 6 quarts total?

Call around your local Honda dealers. I ended up getting a whole case of Z1 for $50, when another dealer could have cost me $112. I did a change on my trans earlier this year and the fluid is brown again thanks to either its age or the heat, so I'm glad I have some on hand still.

Yes, 6quarts will do two changes. If the fluid is brown, I would do 2 changes. Happy Hondaing.

Since so much stays behind when you drain, there will ALWAYS be some residual left over. Maybe plan your next change for 10k miles or even sooner. You will want to know how soon it gets dirty again.

I just did another change on my car this morning after putting maybe 8,000 miles on it after the first one. The fluid still had a slight rose tinge to it, but the magnetic plug had nasty BLACK sludge on it instead of silver stuff from the first time! If your fluid doesn't look red at all when you drain it, do another drain around the same time you do an oil change.
I may get a smaller tube for my manual suction pump and try and scrounge out some of the sludge on the bottom of the pan when I do another change around the end of the year just to be safe.

Its a really clearish brown, not black or stinky really.. so 2 drains should be good? I will go ahead and purchase some ATF fluid then, thanks!

not sure if you know but make sure you get Honda ATF, not anything else. Honda transmissions seem to be pretty picky so get the right stuff...
