Icon6 Problems installing 95 Accord Antenna

Bought a new antenna on Ebay and was attempting to install the new unit when I got stuck with this problem. I removed the old Antenna, I had to break it off. Then I read that there would be some old pieces stuck in the motor. I was able to partially remove the motor just enough to open the face plate and remove the old pieces. Then I turned the unit upside down and gave it a bang and another piece of the mast came out. I reassembled the motor and attempted to feed the new motor but to no avail. It's not feeding it in, it won't even grab a piece of it. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

Leave the motor plugged in, have someone go inside your car, turn the car on, then turn the radio off while you're trying to feed the antenna through. Sometimes that'll work, if not, then take some pics and post them.

Okay, I managed to get the antenna installed but now it makes a clicking sound when it goes down and a clicking sound when it extends. I'm starting to think the motor has gone bad? What do you guys think?

Sounds like a bad antenna mast to me. Was it bent at all? Are the teeth engaging properly?

Well the antenna mast came new and the teeth are engaged. No bends. I'm going to take a picture and maybe a video clip for proper analysis.

If you over-tighten the antenna nut, the antenna may stick; back the nut off a little and see if it still clicks. Other than that, you may have a few broken teeth on the motor drive gear.

I had the same problem you may need to cut off the rest of the teeth that is sticking out when its off. I took mine out of my car and hooked it up to a switch and 12v battery so i could ajust it myself.

Tommygun, when you did the cutting of teeth, did that insert the antenna all the way in the car or still leave a little out? Redbull I am going to try your suggestion on loosening the screw to see if that makes a difference.

Okay I contacted the Ebay seller regarding this problem, he said the clicking noise is a worn pin and the reason why I can't slide the antenna all the way in is due in part of the old sleeve being still inside. Anyone one know what pin he's talking about and secondly how I can attempt to remove the old sleeve out? Is the sleeve the metal piece that's around the antenna? Thanks!

Yes the best way like i said is to take it completely out of the trunk and take it apart and do some cleaning up of the actuator. That will help you make total scence of it all.

The actuator being the metal cylinder that connects to the motor correct?

The clicking can either be the belt skipping teeth on the gear or an internal clutch that allows the gear train to self adjust the mast position. Take the plastic cover off the side of the motor housing (4 screws). Remove the switch assembly (2 screws). Lift off the large gear, the small gear meshed to it will lift off as well. Where the belt from the mast enters the motor housing there is a metal pin. Many times the side of the pin against which the belt runs (to keep the belt engaged with the gear) is worn such that it allows the belt to skip teeth on the gear. Use a pliers to pull the pin out, rotate it 180 degrees, and reinstall so that an unworn portion of the pin faces the belt. It is a good idea to clean up the insides, the spool on the opposite side as well, and relubricate with a light grease that won't really thicken up in the cold. Assembly is reverse of disassembly. The new mast can be installed with it out of the car. Sorry, no pictures - I have rebuilt a couple dozen 90-93 antennas, but not lately.

Alright everyone, following-up with my results. Success! I took the antenna motor off again and this time I yanked the metal cylinder out. Inside I found a tiny piece of aluminum from the previous antenna it was very very small but enough to jam the antenna from going all the way down. I then got the new antenna, manually feed the mast into the tube. Put the covers back on, installed, and it worked. Thanks everyone!

Congratulations! Sorry, I forgot to mention the tube. Many of these are so corroded it is difficult to remove. They do accumulate a fair amount of dirt and other debris at the bottom, particularly if the antenna hasn't been all the way up or down for while.
