I'm not a car guy, not at all. I do however have no problem researching things and changing my own oil. The check engine light on my 1996 Accord came on and I bought an OBDII tool, which gave me code: P1456.

Looking that up here it said: P1456 90 EVAP Emission Control System Leak Detected (Fuel Tank System)

What's next, what do I need to do? Is this something I need to bring it in for? What can I do to possibly visually verify this issue?

check gas cap that its on tight(replace with oem cap if needed)..Are you getting a gas smell?

from my experiences evap codes happen in ALOT of vehicals.

had it happen in a 2000 silverado, 98 ram, 00 pontiac, and both my accords.

and so far luckly its always been the fuel cap. (knock on wood)


make sure you wipe the cap off as well as the filler neck for a good seal, tighten it on, then make it do a couple extra "clicks" i do 3 or 4 no problem.

other wise its something dealing with from what iv "heard" (not entirely sure) could be a hole in the filler neck, a charcoal canister (or equivalent)

best bet buy the 15$ new gas cap and have at it. once cap is on also remove the positive cable, let it sit off for 10min to reset the code drive it and if it comes on again check it.
