Hi-

I just replaced my oil pan gasket for the second time as the first gasket was being pushed out of its place and leaked.

After talking with a honda dealer mechanic about why my gasket was pushed out and leaked. First thing came out of his mind was that if I have used liquid sealant in between the mating surface along with the regular gasket. I said yes. He said not to use any liquid sealant and make sure that the mating surfaces are clean and free of debris and oil.

Now, it seems to be O.K. now after I put a new gasket and used no liquid sealant.

I have read many places that they have used liquid sealant along with the regular gasket for oil pans. Here I am puzzled? (no, I did not rush and added oil after I put sealant and gasket.)

Could Honda oil pan gasket contain some ingredents that it would expand and seal by itself when in contact with oil? Just wondered.
Any comment?

thats possible...
I would guess that it is made from the same material that the valve cover gasket is, and that isnt supposed to have any sealant except for in those 4 corners (but the pan doesnt have any corners)
All I know is that it seals up as long as you have the mating surfaces clean.

About the expansion of the material, how would you test that?

I will apply 3M weatherstrip adhesive to both sides of the gasket to help hold it in place. Don't use RTV silicone.

the thing is that once you take out the oilpan, you need to get a new oil pan gasket from honda. with the new oem gasket you shouldnt need anymore silicone or HONDAbond sealer.

make sure you torque all the bolt down and it should leaks free.

oh, yeah, clean the contacting surface of oil gasket leftover, silicone leftover and dust in general
