Are you sure the mechanical part of the VSS is working?
If the gear stripped it will not turn the VSS, no VSS signal, no Speedo.

What year? My son's 90 EX 4 door auto has that issue so we're about to try a new OEM VSS; fingers crossed.

have you guys even hooked up a dmm to the signal wire at the back of the dash to see if you guys even get a reading. there probably is a break in the wire.

You might check your vss to make sure the drive pin didn't fall out when you installed it.
Happen to me once!

Just a thought.

If the VSS is bad, the cruise control will not function properly or even work at all. I originally swapped the whole cluster trying to fix the speedo issue , but the second cluster also had a bad board. Then I just swapped just the board and the second one worked. My vss and speedo circuit board failed around the same time. When the vss went out after I fixed the board(I got a cel for the vss) the speedo starting jumping again. I pulled a used vss and it fixed it. Hope that made sense and helped....lol....good luck.

I guess my point was that when it was just a bad speedo board on my 94 ex, the speedometer needle didn't move at all. When the vss went bad the needle jumped erradically and sometimes didn't move, and my cruise control control malfunctioned.

FWIW, a "new genuine OEM" VSS has fixed his speedometer, eliminated the flashing "S" and turned off the bogus CEL. Thanks to everyone for this thread (Yes I realize we threw replacement money at at it instead of a real diagnosis...).
