Manual Transmission Problem............EX
hi there, im new to this group and i just have a couple of questions. I bought a honda accord EX about two months ago and it has 177,000 miles. It has a Vtec but i dont know anything about what type it is?? no clue. Also, i was driving on the highway today and once i got off the highway my tramsmission was slipping. 1st and 2nd were but 3rd on up wasent bad at all. Now ive heard the trans could slip in cold weather, but i live in ohio and the winters here are bad and cold. It neverdid that during the winter so far till now. I have yet to have a problem with the car just this one time. I just took it out for a spin and it dosent slip. I dont know if the stress of the long highway was to much for the trans. Hit me back. Im still trying to learn the layout to this whole thing.
Thankx,
oOo Louie oOo

you have a 2.2 liter vtec SOHC f22b1 engine.
check the fluid level for the clutch, and how old is the clutch?

is that a pretty decent engine?? I do check the clutch fluid regulary. It does use some fluid but it usually takes a month. Am i due for a klutch?? The car is sweet and i plan on doing upgrades soon. Im just worried that i screwed it up.

it is a soild engine as long as its cared for.
as for the clutch, it could be time for a new one.. exspecially if its the original. as long as your transmission isn't grinding then i wouldn't think it'd be it itself, but you might want to change the fluid in the transmission itself.

Right on man. Its slipping in third, so something is wrong. Plus i think my RPM's are running a little high. I can still drive it for a bit right. Thankx for all youre help by the way. Very informative.

one of the ways i can tell if a clutch is slipping is find a hill and really push the car and see if it slips. If it does, the clutch is failing, if not, then theres something else wrong.. im not sure what the interval for a clutch change is, but im guessing around 100k would be a normal life.
now throw in the mix of someone learning to drive and you would probably greatly shorten that life.

Re: Manual Transmission Problem............EX (sony224422)
im going to try that. My trans dosent grind or anything, but I do have to let the clutch out quite a bit for it to catch. Sometimes i just let it all the way out and it takes right off. It dosent stall but it does kinda shake the car a little. Ive drove sticks before and my honda was the toughest for me to get use to because i have to let the clutch out so much. Thanks again for the information that your passing along. This group is very informative and helpful, and so are you. Thankx man!!! Got any other good ideas?? My engine in the honda is still a strong runner.

yeah it sounds like your clutch is on the way out.. i'd bet its the orignal or 2nd one.. so its probably time for a new one as it is.. i think when they wear down it takes longer for them to engage.

another way to test your clutch is put it in a higher gear like 3rd or 4th and punch it. if your rpms go up and your pretty much at a stand still, then your disk is worn. or the other thing could be you have a leaky crank seal and oil is getting to your disk. you will drive normal for about 2-3 mins but once you starting pushing that clutch in and out, that hot oil gets to the disk and same result happens as with a worn disk. but at 177k, its probably just time.

Re: (HondaAccordTdR)
Yeah it has to be the clutch. I dropped it into 3rd and trompted it. The rpm's shot up and i wasent moving very fast till it caught. How much am i looking to spent on a clutch replacment?? Should i just get some badass racing clutch??

Re: (johnnytwopoint)
depends on your mods. if you don't have any mods, go oem type. if you have moderate, go with a bit of an upgrade. a street clutch will work here. i doubt if your heavily moded. if you were, you wouldn't be asking this question. also if you plan to do a little bit with your car, just go ahead and get a decent street clutch kit. stay away from no name ebay clutches. exedy is on ebay alot. its a good brand. i got a street clutch from there. I'd have to research the seller to tell you who i got i from. but he was legit and fast shipment. ACT might be a little harsh engagement for you but i think they have a street kit thats fair for oem drivers.

Re: (flight50)
Price depends on a few factors.
If you have a shop do all the work you might be looking upwards of $1000. But again that all depends on rates blah blah blah.
There really is no point to get a bad-*** racing clutch. It will make a daily driver more work to drive.
Good luck.

Re: Manual Transmission Problem............EX
I tow a utility trailer with my '99 EX sedan. The clutch is engaging higher and higher and the fluid is good and has been bleed recently. Would a stage I clutch help me with pulling the moutains here with the trailer.
