Interior stinks / smells when it rains !
OK- My car has had this problem for the last two years (rainy season only) and I finally figured it out.
The car- 1999 Honda Accord LX 4D Auto 139K Original owner and Im the only one who drives it- ever. No collisions.
Symptom- After driving in the rain, I would park the car in the garage overnight and in the morning it would stink like wet dog, feet, etc. A real heavy pungent wet odor.
I checked the forums and mechanics opinions and everyone insisted it was a leak (which I also thought at first). The w/s has never been out (original from Honda is still in place), the passenger front glass was replaced with Honda glass by the dealer (after a break in) but no other trauma. I checked the trunk, the drains in the passenger door for obstructions (just in case), changed cabin filters, smelled the intake vents for a dead rodent, etc. I mean Im really reachin' at this point!
The FIX- Drivers floor mat. I removed it ('cause I was out of ideas and was reaching at straws) after a rain and it sat overnight. The next morning the smell was not present in the car. Whats weird is that you almost cant smell anything weird on the floormat when its damp but being trapped in the car overnight was the catalyst. Apparently getting in and out a couple of times and getting the mat a little wet would release this foul stench. I used laundry soap, a wash cloth, and a garden hose to clean the mat. I dried it and then Scotchguarded it. SMELL GONE!
BTW- My brothers 2000 Honda Odyssey has the exact same smell but worse 'cause he has lots of passengers all the time whereas I never do. I think he's gonna use a power washer on'em.
