Default Engine swap j30 to j30

What is the best way to remove engine top or bottom. Some things online say from the bottom, and then heard you can do it from top just a little tighter space to get it out. In 30+years, I've always figured all engines could be pulled from top. But then again I'm not a professional mechianic either. I have changed out an engine on older rear wheel drive vehicle. But this will be first front wheel drive. All and any info will be greatly appreciated. Thank in advance

Removing a engine from a vehicle it's your job to figure out what is the best way and easiest way for you with getting the job done.

I had to swap my engine from my 2001 mdx, but before I started the job I got some information from online service sites and they recommend to drop engine and trans from the bottom. I looked at the top of the engine and told myself why can I pull out from the top? So, unfortunately the engine will not fit over the top, it's to narrow and tight. I lifted my vehicle off the floor drop the subframe and rollout out my engine and trans together.

So take a look at what's the best way for you to swap the engine from your vehicle.

would you happen to know of a good site to get good info from. I never dropped an engine from the bottom before. I believe you have to remove the subframe, haven't done that before either.

There is a great video on YouTube. The guy shows taking out a 4 cyl from the bottom. Search YouTube. Should still be same basic principal
with the subframe and all. Don’t quote me tho, never taken out an engine and never got near the v6

What do you have for tools?

Do you have a vehicle hoist or engine lift or no lifting gear at all?

I have dropped an I4 w/trans out the bottom with the use of a dolly and jack stands while I have also lifted a V6 w/trans out of the bay with an engine lift.

I4 out through the bottom

All depends on what gear you have.

You can get information about vehicle service from Alldatadiy but you'll have to pay, not much if you look for a discount it's not that much of a price.
The removal of the engine is the same as you where removing it from the top. Disconnected all the electrical, hoses, steering parts, suspension parts but the only differs is that you'll need to get the vehicle up from the ground making sure you can clear the engine when it's drop. I used two 3 ton jacks, cut some ply wood lay it over one another making sure it can hold the weight off the engine and trans and measure the size of the sub frame, where once I drop the frame I pulled the engine and trans out pulling the jacks one by one and it worked great. You will need a engine hoist to swap engines when removing from the trans.

If it's proving too hard to find, a Haynes repair manual will have the process. When I dropped my F22B1, my mechanic brother said to drop the subframe, but the manual had us pull the motor from the top. I prefer the old way.

Ok thank you. I believe that setting the car on jack stands should get the car high enough right? I how ever may need to invest in a second floor jack.

Ok, so when I drop my engine from the bottom on my 'mdx' in my garage I had to think safety was key for nothing bad could happen. I first measure the engine block in the vehicle and I think I had to left the truck up 3-4 feet of the ground. The jack will not lift that high so I had to use some heavy brick and wide hard wood to lift the jack off the ground. Also, I put the jack stands on top of some wide brick making sure it could hold the weight off the truck.
Overall, make sure you improvise and not rush your self. I'll post some picture of the wood and brick and maybe you can understand how I ended up getting the job done.

Thanks for that info. I was kinda thinking I'd have to get it higher up for engine to clear. Pics of bricks you used will be helpful also.
how do you post pics on here.

Well I've never post any pictures up here yet but it looks like if you just follow the attachment icon on here and upload the pictures from a computer that will post the pictures up. Also, if the picture are to big in size they may not be able to post up.
