How to tell if an engine is Vtec?
Hi, I'm new here!
This forum has been a great resource to me as far as fixing stuff on my Acura CL, Unfortunately the auto transmission in my car is failing and I've been looking to swap out transmissions with either an accord or cl. I found a couple junkyard transmissions from other acura CL's but they are generallly on the expensive side (600-1000 is what i've found them for locally.) Also they are all auto trans.
Anyway, I figured if I was going to put a new transmission in my car I might as well go for the gusto and do a auto to 5speed swap on it. There are a few accords that I've found at Pick-n-pull yards, but I'm unsure how to easily tell if they are Vtec engines or not. Is there a VIN code or other easily distinguishable way to tell if the car is VTec or not? I'd rather not go to the junkyard and come back empty handed.
Thanks in advance for your replies!

Oh, one of us is going to get killed.
First, welcome.
Second, almost any manual trans will bolt up to the engine. Are you looking for something specific in gearing? Meaning the vtec vs non doesn't matter. I think there is a sticky in the FAQ section that covers what trans has what gears, again if you are looking for spec's.
EDIT - Here a link - http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=37839

Thanks for the fast reply and the link.
I went back and re-read the auto to manual swap DIY/faq. I guess if I am reading it right all I would need is an ECU for the trans conversion to work. Does anyone have a good source for finding one besides ebay? A lot of sites I've looked at are kinda shady looking and do not offer any warranty.

Sorry if you thought I was being an A@#, not what I was trying to do. Just me but I like trying to help people no matter skill or knowledge level...and don't take that the wrong way either
You can also try "car-part dot com" for local yards and see what they have.

Easiest way to look for a VTEC car is to look for 'EX' model accords, then look under hood and look for the 'F22B1' casting on the block. But you will want to verify that it really is by looking at the cam/valve cover it has 'VTEC' cast into it. If the cover is missing look for the VTEC solenoid on the head above the EGR solenoid.

This should help. The top two pictures show you the vtec solenoid. I believe it has a single green and yellow wire going to it. I may be wrong, but the wire's main color is green. If you see that solenoid, you have a vtec engine.

Easiest way for me(besides what was pointed out already) on F-series SOHC engines:
VTEC- plug wires and holes on the front of the valvecover, closest to exhaust manifold.
Non-VTEC- plug wires on the back of the valvecover, closest to the intake manifold.
Also, for all USDM VTEC F-series SOHC engines(should be all of them):
F22B1(94-97 Accord EX, 97 Acura 2.2 CL)
F23A1(98-02 Accord, 98-99 2.3 CL)
F23A4(98-02 Accord, ULEV)
F23A7(1998 Odyssey)

Hey so maybe the thread title is misleading/retarded. I'm a honda noob, I'm OK with that. Sorry, but I'm trying to figure most of this out on my own and I don't mind asking stupid questions.
Thanks for the fast reply and the link.
