How much oil does my '99 LX hold?
I plan on changing the oil on my other car (a Volvo) this weekend, might as well start changing the oil on my Accord by myself. It's a 4 cyl engine.
How many quarts of oil will I be putting in the engine afterwards?
Also, are there any recommendations on the brand of oil? And weight? It is the start of the summer, and I'm in Illinois (temps will be in the 80s and 90s), so 10W-30? 5W-30 is for the winter, right?
Thanks!

i believe your engine holds about ~4.25-4.5 quarts with a new oil filter. i'd initially add 4 quarts and let the car sit overnight. then the next morning, i would add more oil accordingly so you can avoid overflling the engine.
btw 5w30 is recommended for the f22/f23 motors.

on 02 model i think it's 5w20
4bottle is too little so you'll end up buying five.

the 4-cyl takes 4.5 quarts. (i'm assuming you change the oil filter each time.) the recommended is 5w-30 for that year accord, but you'll be fine using 10w-30 during the summer if you really want to use it.

philadd is correct, it takes 4.5 quarts if you change the filter too.. since you're in illinois, you can use 5w30 for the summer and 0w30 for winter months.. 10w30 isn't necessary unless you're in extremely hot climates.. especially in our 4cyl..
as for the 02's and up.. 5w20 is meant for cleaner emissions.. but has a lower limit of protection.. you might want to consider changing to 5w30

I'll be picking up the oil (5 qts) and a filter tonight, along with oil for my Volvo (already have the filter). Now, on the Volvo, synthetic is highly recommended by the Volvo board people (Mobil 1 in particular, the Volvo is a turbo model). I assume that regular Mobil, Valvoline, etc would be fine for the Honda (not the no-name stuff).

I just picked up a 5 quart jug of Castrol GTX for $7 or so from Wal-Mart, I'm good to go.
Thanks for the info!

Id recommend going with synthetic, because once you go syn, you cant go back, and syn is more expensive. So if you're ever in a money bind, you gotta shell out that $22 for a 5-qt jug of Mobil 1. Personally I take my car to wally world, and have them put in Super-Tech 10w30(walmart brand oil), and they change the filter and lube the chassis, comes to like $12.50 ... cant go wrong... Oh, and my v6 took 4.5 qts.

What do you mean, you can't switch from syn to regular?
Funny that you mention Mobil 1, at the same time that I picked up the Castro GTX for my Honda, I picked up a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 for my Volvo (which has a turbo) and yes, the cost was just under $22 (after tax).

Re: (Heat)
syn binds to your motor or someshit, dino juice wont stick like it should after using synthetic... i think thats the reasoning behind it... but i could be wrong.
