What is the correct way to troubleshoot a 2.0 16 valve fuel system in this car that is not getting fuel?i dont want to go through process of elimination.Thanks.

Well basically, you have to work your way through the system. I can't type the whole thing, because it would take 2 pages and some pictures. But i can at least steer you in the right direction. A manual would be your best bet or something like Haynes at the very least. I am taking for granted that you do not have special tools to diagnos this (fuel pressure, etc...) but you must have at least a test light, or better yet a multimeter. But anyways, this is what i do:

1. turn key to on and listen for pump to prime (about 2 seconds)
if it does not prime, tap into the electrical feed wires at the pump and check if power is getting to pump, if yes, bad pump, if no, check for bad ground, open wire and check relay behind glove box.

if it does prime, then check fuel filter: remove line right after filter and crank. Does fuel spit out? If no fuel spits out, then check if indeed you have gas, check if fuel pump is blocked.

I can't really right more at this point since i am not sure what your problem is. Can you at least describe it.

start at the fuel pump power connector which is on top of the fuel tank. I can't recall whether you get to this from under the trunk carpet or under the back seat.

A common fault on this vehicle is the fuel injection 'main relay'. This is a reddish-brown relay directly above the big silver cruise control module underdash.

These relays have a printed circuit board that get's cracked solder connections.
the fix is a new relay or to reflow (resolder) the solder traces.

Typical failure mode is no-start when vehicle is hot (parked in sun all day)...since cracked solder joints expand. This relay activates both the ECU and the fuel pump.

As a prior poster suggested, listen for the whirr of the fuel pump priming when you turn on the key.

There is no fuel pump sound-i wanted to know where the relay was so i could check it first-this is a friends car-she started it,got on the freeway and it just died and would only crank.I could not smell fuel.I will check it out today and post what i find.Thank you guys.

The main fuel relay is difficult to find. It's under the dash, high and against the outside of the vehicle on driver's side. If car has speed control, remove the three bolts holding the speed control and allow to hang loose. The MFR is above the speed control module on a metal bracket. Remove the bolt holding the metal bracket to the body. It's almost impossible to separate the MFR from the bracket in place. The MFR has an 8-pin connector but only 7 wires coming to the connector. A wiring diagram w/ wire colors helps to confirm you have the correct relay.

The MFR can be disassembled and repaired if you're handy w/ soldering. The fault is due to fatigued solder joints. Remove all old solder w/ "solder sucker" or other tool and resolder the joints. A new MFR runs about $50-$65. It's a Mitsuba relay.
