Default Honda Transmission Fluid sucks

Been meaning to post this for awhile. Have a 2000 Accord V6 with 210K miles.

The transmission had been feeling sluggish as we were approaching the 200K mark. So I decided to do the 3X flush around the 201K. But this time around, Honda started to phase in the newer DW1 fluid. So went ahead and used it; it was fine for a little while, but after about 6K miles, my wife was complaining about the slippage and several times she couldn't get it out of gear.

At this point, I figured the transmission was just shot and it was time to replace or replace the car. But, I decided to do another flush with Honda fluid, fluid was clean with nothing unusual in the fluid. The car drove much better. But after another 1,000 miles, it was back to the same.

This time did a 3X flush with Amsoil fluid. What a difference, night and day. Car is going on about 3K miles on the Amsoil and it shifts so much smoother with no slipping. Wife is not complaining, which is the best part.

Hmm. Are there any unusual additives in the amsoi. That's very interesting to know though

Don't know about the additives. After reading several recommendations from Honda owners from the Bob the Oil Guy forum, I figured I had nothing to lose, since I thought the tranny needed to be replaced anyhow.

My wife has literally not complained since the switch.

Ignoring the fact that that generation automatic transmission is known to be problematic. And you make no mention as to whether or not you were doing regular changes or if you randomly doing it 12+ years and 200k miles for the first time.

There are a bunch of options for transmission fluid. I use Honda MTF without any issues in my supercharged S2000 as well as in my '96 H22A swapped Accord. Also did a flush in my '97 Accord automatic with the newer fluid without any issues.

I wouldn't make a thread saying it 'sucks' when your whole experience wraps around a single vehicle with known transmission problems. Maybe the Amsoil will work for you, maybe it will crap out at 5k miles.

The fluid was regularly changed at recommended intervals with Honda Z1 fluid. Yes, we've known about the transmissions issues with the vehicle, but we never experienced it during our ownership.

When we got the 200K mark, it seemed to be slipping, especially in reverse and we figured we had a good run on the tranny, in consideration of all the reported tranny problems on the car. When we did the flush at that mark, the new generation of Honda fluid was out, the DW1. The sluggish feeling got a little better, but as miles added on, it was getting worse, again reverse being the worst and a several instances of difficulty getting into gear. Again, just figured the tranny was going out. We already had a mechanic all lined up to replace it, but his schedule was basically booked.

Again, another 3X flush, but this time with Amsoil. Low and behold, it was so much better. It is just night and day. We've held off on getting a new tranny, as there hasn't been any issues. Going on 4 months now. Yes it's a short period of time, but compared to the DW1 that was in there, this is a noticeable improvement. I'm not saying that Amsoil is some sort of miracle cure for tranny issues, but it sure seems like the DW1 fluid was causing us headaches, in comparison to both Z1 and Amsoil.
