Default heater control **** is really difficult to adjust

hey guys so i've been having some trouble with my car when i try to adjust the temperature **** inside the car. it's extremely difficult to turn the **** and i have broke the **** a few times and i now just use a pair of pliers.

i'm really not sure how to fix it. a friend of mine said there is a cable that might need to be adjusted or lubricated. can any one help?

thanks!!

hey buddy. my 94 prelude and 90 accord both do the same thing. im sure taking the dash temp gauge out and making sure all the moving parts are greased/lubricated correctly to remove loss of travel. or possibly searching a junkyard for another temp gauge would work

basically our **** is old so the dust over the years gets stuck in the grease that lubes the moving parts inside the temp gauge and clogs it reducing travel. just gotta clean those moving parts thoroughly and grease them up again and throw the gauge back in the dash. but for some reason i just have not felt like getting all into the dash so mine never got done.. yes im talking about the temp **** not the actual coolant gauge.

What year are you driving.....most of them had two cables-one from the **** to the blend door-the other from the door to the control valve. If you have a manual, look at the blend door adjustment.

go to a dealer and tell the parts dept what is going on. the will give you a little metal sleeve that will go inside the **** and will keep it from breaking. it is an issue with all of the accords 90-97

REALLY? A few things, first the dealer isn't going to "give" anything...second the ***** usually break the outer plastic-but you wouldn't know that.....so if anything, there should be a sleeve for the outside of the plastic where it goes on to the shaft.......please tell us the part number for this free, magical sleeve?

I have found the heater valves can get hard to turn over time. If that valve is stiff, it will be very hard to turn the temperature blend ****.

i actually noticed this last night when bleeding the coolant. my old coolant system had all kinds of scale in it so i dont doubt the valve needs replacing

It's going to be a matter of working backwards from the hot water control valve to determine whats going on.
Whats involved her is this:
1) Temp control **** / Heater control assembly.
2) Cable #1 - This runs from the control head to the Heater Box's temperature control door actuator arm.
3) Cable #2 - This runs from the Heater Box's temperature control door actuator arm to the Hot Water Control Valve.
4) Hot water control valve.
I would start with inspecting the HWCV. It is the most common failure for this (besides the busted temp **** :-( and is the easiest to reach.
Disconnect the control cable from the Valves actuator arm and check if it (the valve) operates freely. At the same time, operate the control **** and note if it works any easier.
If the valves binding; great - replace it. If it is NOT binding; order BOTH temp control cables (and their retainer clips) from your favorite Honda source. Fixing this will then require delving into the dashboard and you'll want all possible replacement parts available cuz you don't want to do this twice !!

Is there any specific grease you would recommend for the temperature controller? The plastic parts I cleaned had old looking cream/dark yellow grease (similar to what I am seeing all around in the A/T Gear shifter panel). I used a freshly bought CRC White Lithium Grease (spray can) on the glove box key cylinder and it "appears" to have done the job, though at first it appeared slightly sticky and not greasy; perhaps that was just the cold temperature of the grease when it comes out of the can. Any help/tips on this are much much appreciated! Thanks!

Its likely the cable is binding. Pop off the plastic cover at the bottom passenger floor and check the cable.

anything you see with grease on plastic parts, it's most likely white lithium, the stuff will turn yellow and get nasty looking with age

Ah, that's what I was thinking, thanks for the confirmation, good to know I am using the right kind of grease.

On a tangent, though relevant to the heater control panel, does anyone know the specs of the small spring that goes where the picture indicates? This part is part of the temperature controller assembly. Would this spring be listed in the service manual or would it be available only as part of the larger part? And... should I repost this as a separate thread? Thanks!
