Default Grinding noise from R front wheel

I have a 97 Accord EX, yesterday the right fron wheel started making a horrible grinding noise, it only does while running. it doenst get better or worse when I brake and it doesn't correlate at all with how fast I am going, the wheel dosnt turn or anything, the ride feels the same it is just a really loud screacing/grinding noise.
any ideas?

You will need to do a good brake inspection but before tearing whe wheel and tire off jack it up to take the weight off of the bearing and spin the wheel and tire and see if the noise is still there, remove the wheel and tire and see if the noise is still there without the weight of the wheel and tire assy. I would think that you have a bad hub bearing. Back up, before you pull the wheel and tire off while it is jacked up in the air and the lug nuts still tight, GRAB THE TOP AND THE BOTTOM OF THE TIRE AND ROCK IT, while you are facing the tire, left hand on top and right hand on the bottom, push the top away from you and pull the bottom toward you, reverse the push and pull. back and forth to see of the wheel and tire assy is loose on the hub, loose hub bearing will allow the whole thing to rock. Make sure that is is just not your lug nuts being loose too.

If the brake pads check out ok, try inspecting between the rear of the rotor and the rear dust/stone shield. You may have picked up a stone which lodged between the two. Makes a truely hideous noise.

I dont think the lugs are loose because like i said, the ride is not affected, it feels smooth, its just the noise.

if it were a rock wouldnt the noise correlate with speed?

thanks for the replies

^^

thanks but like i said it doesnt matter if I use the breaks or not. the only thing that seems to make a difference is whether its in motion or not other than that speed, direction, turning, breaking or not breaking do not affect the sound at all

just pull the wheel and chk it out , no offense but when i read these kind of question i shake my head ,,,,,,,,,,,,wouldn';t it be a lot simpler to pull the wheel urself and chk it out versus have us try to guess over the net?? i mean it is a very simple task that way u would know first hand what the problem is
try to do urself first if u get stumped then ask for help

I agree, sometimes I feel like "Karnack the Magnificent" (apologies to Johnny Carson) trying to 'devine the answer'

thanks but i dont really know much when it comes to cars i just wanted to get a general idea so that if i end up taking it to the shop i wont get hosed, by the way the problem just went away today so maybe it was a rock or something, i'll post the fix if i ever find out.

[QUOTE=sadpanda]thanks but i dont really know much when it comes to cars

again no offense meant but u should at least know how to remove a wheel , what happens if u get a flat while driving u need to put the spare tire on ...
what i meant was pull the wheel off and look for something unusual as it turned out it probably was a rock and u would have been able to see it and remove it
dont get me wrong i am not trying to give u a hard time ..

Something to remember: No one ( that I know of ) was ever born with a timing light in his / her hand or the genetic memory of auto repair . In fact I'd be so bold as to say that at one point or another, NONE of us knew anything about cars.
The secret is to not fear asking questions......

Deserthonda is correct however, we can offer all manner of "could be this's and could be that's" but untimately you've got to do the foot (or wrench) work.

As far as I am concedrned ask all the silly questions you want, I have lots of silly answers, BUT COME BACK AND TELL US WHAT YOU DID TO FIX IT OR AT LEAST THAT YOU CANT AFFORD TO FIX THE DAMN THING. BETTER YET, TELL US THAT EVERYONE WAS WRONG AFTER YOU WASTED $375 ON OUR SUGGESTIONS AND YOU WANT ALL OF US TO PITCH IN AND GIVE YOU A FRICKIN' REFUND, then tell us what the real fix was PLEASE.
