Default Gas Smell inside car... think I figured it out...

Ok, I just bought my 90 Accord EX and am in the process of shampooing the interior and I've been smelling gas inside the car pretty strong since I bought it, well when I pulled the carpet out of the trunk I noticed the little cap was missing one screw and the other 2 were holding it very weak, should I put RTV around the edge and get better screws to hold it done tight and that'll solve my problem?

It will probably solve my problem but is the gas smell even suppose to be there at all, I'm not leaking anything anywhere under the car, is there a gasket around the fuel pump I should try and replace at all or nah? Any help tonight would be appreciated as I'm putting everything back together tomorrow

I would check this out. For some time I was smelling gas in my 92 accord (same model )so I went looking and found the leak. I talked to Honda about this and was supprised to find out that this spot is a VERY VERY COMMON problem area in the accord (the parts guy knew exactly what I was looking for).

Anyways, where the gas line comes out of the tank, it is a rubber line which transitions to a steal line that is attached to a fitting which is attached to the front of the left rear wheel well area. All the steal line is plastic coated except where this fitting is and you guessed it, it rusts.

Jack the car up and remove the left rear wheel. At the inside top of the wheel well area you will find a black plactic cover ( two or three bolts) which covers up the gas lines. Locate the rubber line from the fuel tank and follow it until it transitions to steal and is secured to the car. That fitting which is secured to the car is the culprit. You will see that the plastic cover on the line is partaly removed so that it can be attached to the fiitting (rusty), and by the way, this is a high preasure suply line. I cleaned the rust off of the fitting and started the car. Gas sprayed everywhere.

It's a very easy fix. move forward of the fitting until you have good steal line and cut the line ( I used a mini tub cutter - worked brillantly ). Next cut the rubber line out of the gas tank just before it transitions back to steal. Reconect the two ends using a peice of 5/16 high preasure fuel injection hose, double ended brass barbed connector, and a couple of hose clamps. Worked great. Secure the new line and remove that old junction attached to the car.

I cann't take full credit for this fix because originally I went to a gas tank shop and thay did the fix. The guy also said they see this all the time. Later ,a cheap hose clamp broke and I had to re do the repair with the proper materials. Note, use fuel injection hose clamp, not regular ones. Been going strong for a year now.\

Long read, but if any questions, let me know and I can try and simplify it and post some pick.

lol.... you just saved me a lot of trouble... i just RTV'd up the cover in my trunk today... no more smell inside the car but standing outside of it on the drivers side I get a strong smell... i think its what you exactly said... i'm gonna throw it on the lift at my work as soon as I can and fix it.... I think your right though... so bascially cut the metal line where its not rusted and make a longer rubber tube and using double ended brass barbed connector? Thanks

well... figured out my real problem today... that cover that I RTV'd up that covers the fuel level unit wasn't the problem... it was the ring that hold the unit in place... whoever did it before half *** did it and only 2 tabs were holding it, not all 3 holding it tight. Figured it out because I filled up my tank today and gas poured out everywhere under the car... tested it by my g/f taking off and the gas just poured out... easy fix, just rtv'd the gasket put the metal ring on the right way and fixed... no more gas smell or leaking
