Fuel pump nozzle clicking off at gas station (P1457)
Hey guys. Just picked up a 1999 Honda Accord as my commuter. So far I love it.
Only thing is that I failed emissions with a P1457. And when I get gas, once the attendant puts the nozzle in the tank and sets it, it 'clicks' and stops fueling after 5 seconds. I know the pump nozzle has a mechanism that is operated off of vacuum to shut off, and the P1457 is an EVAP related code, so I figured the two could be interrelated.
I've been searching but been coming up short. I'm kinda hoping that someone in here will say "oh yeah I had that problem, this is your problem".
Thanks you guys.
Edit: 4 cylinder LX, AT, if that makes a difference.

Have you tried pumping from a different gas station? Is your gas gauge registered near empty? Have you tried searching P1457? I dont think they are related.

-Saturated evap canister (this calls for new canister)
-Faulty evap solenoid (switch to evap canister will not engage)
-Faulty gas cap (I figure it can't be this, gas cap passed the state inspection)

1457 can not be caused by a faulty fuel cap. P1456 and P1457 are codes best left to the dealer or a good aftermarket shop to diagnose. What state do you live in?

Finally I discovered the problem can be solved by twisting the fuel pump nozzle 90 degrees or even more till the fuel hose is horizontal or even facing upward a little. This way the nozzle will not shut off too early.

It may be the EVAP Control Canister Vent Shut Valve or the PCM. I would say the valve though. Depending on the State where the car is, it is even more likely if it is in out of the listed States.

rotate the filler nozzle slightly and the problem should go away for the constant clicking off of the gas pump.
Code P01457 = from the tank to the engine, in your case it may be an FTP sensor, two way valve, canister shut valve or purge control solenoid.

Thank you for the information on the code guys. Here in NJ, I have to deal with the guy struggling with the pump until I get out of the car and tell him I'll take care of it. It wouldn't be so much of a problem if I were in another state =/
That PDF is great information. I think that I'll be able to narrow down the problem with this. This is more or less what I was looking for.
Thanks again!

Just so everyone knows who uses the search feature for this problem, changing the solenoid DID fix the check engine light AND the fuel pump handle shut off problem.
If you are trying to see whether or not your evap canister solnoid/valve is bad or not, remove the canister and remove the switch. If you look on the underside, you will see a white "wheel", which basically rotates to open or close the switch. If this is stuck in any position, I'd bet its bad, as mine was. The new piece had a white wheel that moved very freely with no forcing at all.
