Do performance chips really work? ie. Mugen
I was looking at the mugen performance chip for my 95 Accord found here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...33597
Ive had mixed thoughts and opinions from various people. Some say it will work sometimes but will not live up to the full potential and other say it will not work period. Is this true? Would i need some kind of computer programmer in order for this ecu? I just dont understand how you can automatically gain up to 20 hp just by installing a chip with no programming involved. Any help would be greatly appreciated......

i dont know about mugen chips but i sent my ecu to jet performence and they put a chip and tunde it for me and it pull harder im not sure the hp power but it helped me on the take off

It just changes a few things around, all in all, it will definately not give you 20hp, maybe 1 or 2...but there's more cons than pros in the install. Like rough idle, dangerously high rev limiter.
Also, every car is different in its needs for fuel and ignition timing, so there's no "optimal" performance chip for your car. The only way to get performance from electronics is to have it tuned, on the dyno that is, and that's something I strongly suggest as an upgrade.
Greddy e-manage should do the trick, unless you want to change your ECU to a P28, in which case you can use the free tuning software called uberdata or the piggy back computer hondata.
If you have a really deep wallet, go for a standalone computer management system, like AEM EMS (Engine Management System) or a Motec system, which all run well over $1000.
Greddy e-manage - $300.00
Uberdata - $000.00
Hondata - $290.00
P28 ECU - $100-200 (Used on Ebay)

No, chips do not work 
I seriously doubt that is even a 'Mugen' chip. If you feel like wasting your money send it to me, but at least I won't even claim to give you hp

That's all good advice but unless your car is heavily modified (motor wise) all this is worthless to you. You'd have to have forced induction or a seriously built all-motor setup before you'd even considered these engine management systems

you know what, i was seriously thinking about getting some sort of ECU programming done, because i always hear claims of so much horsepower gain, its surprising, i guess people are out there to just fool you and basically rob you, so what everyone is saying is that if the motor is not heavily worked on, the power wont really play a part...

Well what I find as the problem is that no one makes an ecu programmer for imported cars to get the extra power gain so I was looking for an alternative. I guess you could say im just a cheap *** looking for some extra power

they have a bunch of those for the 1.8T vw/audi IMPORT, piggyback system like vafc/safc and of course the obd1 king bastard hondata.

no, that's definitely not mugen...
about 99.9% of the junk on ebay that says Mugen on it, is not genuine mugen...Mugen does make race ecu's, but not for our cars...only the nsx and s2000 get love in that area...and even so, you can't use those ecu's with pump gas...

chips work.....if you have a 5.0L V8 Turbo Diseal......have you managed to swap one of THOSE in your car, cause if so, they id say you should get the "mugen" chip
