have done tons of crank bolts be it timing belts or just crappy balancers/pullys. most times the 1/2 inch snap on impact will take it off. every once in a while have to break out the 3/4 inch. had to do my honda d15 in my garage and had to use a three foot peice of pipe, and something wedged in the flywheel. (a really bad idea by the way). use the tool. and the starter method seems to be a really dumb idea. the potential for disaster is huge. and by using a torch it takes all the temper out of the crank bolt. then you are left with a bolt with questionable integrity.

Using a long extension cancels out the impact effect with an impact wrench. Try to use no extension if possible. Or get an impact with more *****.

Any tips or tricks would be appreciated!
If you have air tools and you need to get the crank bolt off, The easiest way to do it would be to heat it up with an acetelyene torch and use your impact air tools. Note: a propane torch is not hot enough to loosen the bolt. When you heat the bolt with correct amount of heat, the bolt will get skinny and lengthy which will allow you to break it loose.

tried jamming something in the flywheel, using a 1/2" ratchet, impact socket, and cheater pipe (no extensions)? ive always had better luck using human power over pneumatic when it comes to these tough jobs.

you'd probably need someone else to hold the screwdriver, or whatever, thats in the fly wheel. also a good idea to put a jack under the engine to keep strain off the mounts.

I've never done this job on a Honda but on my Nissan 300zx even a 1/2" Harbor Freight Earthquake (which can remove any other bolt that I throw at it) could not budge my crank bolt. This impact wrench is identical to $200+ models internally. Instead, I used the starter-bump method. In a quarter second, the bolt was loosened enough for the Earthquake to spin it off. I'm sure if my compressor put out 130+ psi versus 115, the wrench would have been able to remove it but for someone with an automatic transmission, the starter method is essential!

If you know what you are doing, this method is one of the best. If you don't know what you are doing, I don't recommend it as you might hurt yourself.

Using heat will fry the oil seals. Then you will create more problems.
