Code needed for anti theft radio on 98 Accord EX 4 dr 4cyl
I disconnected the battery today to clear the CEL and it worked... but to my dismay, found that the radio needed a code to work. User manual says that it should have come with a card with serial number and code on it but since I bought mine used, I never thought about that and I don't have it. I don't even know the serial number of the radio and I am assuming that it will be imprinted on the radio itself? Would I be able to call a dealer and ask for the codes or will they charge me $$$ for the codes?

if you are like me and constantly lose things, write it on pieces of paper and leave it all over your house ,always helped me when i lost the codes..
but yep, just call up honda and ask em what you need.

The code is stamped behind the radio inside the center console. Not on the radio itself. That's what I was told at least.

Dealers won't charge you but it usually takes a day or two for them to get the code. Make sure you check your manual/papers that came with the car. For both my Accords the dealer wrote the code on these documents.

I thought that the dealer could tell the code instantaneously just by looking up the VIN on their computer?
Maybe not, I'm not sure.
Your best bet would be to take the car to the dealer if you have one nearby so that they can see that you have possession, thus most likely ownership, of the car. If they want to charge you for it, move on to another dealership, this is something that is normally done for free (from what I've read on these forums, my '99 LX doesn't have a code on the radio so I've never had to go through this).

take the radio and goto the dealer they might want an insurnace or registration card, and they go away for like 2 minutes and come back with your radio code.
theyre supposed to check and make sure you own that car. theres actually a code on the radio that they need and from that code they get the unlock code for the radio.
it doesnt take 2 days, its pretty much instantaneous.

in my 99 lude there was a label with some numbers in the glove compartment. looked at that, called my local dealer, told them and they gave me the radio code about 30 seconds later....but i live in a small town so they were cool about it...usually you are suposed to go in.

Thanks for all the info. I pulled the radio, copied all the numbers I could find, called up the closest dealership and gave them the numbers... they put me on hold for 2 mins and came back with the code. I'm glad it wasn't a hassle like I was expecting.
Does anyone know if the codes can ever be changed by an owner? Manual doesn't say anything which I assume it's a good thing like this case but I just wonder.
Thanks

there is a serial number on your radio unit, take that serial and your vin to the dealer and from there they will give u a radio code.
