I have a 1998 accord V6 and the check engine light is not illuminating when starting the car. However, if I turn the key 1/2 way just to illuminate the dash without starting the engine the check engine light will light up. This shows me that the bulb is not burnt out. Any idea why the CEL will not light up when actually turning the car on?

It's not supposed to stay on when you start the car, only when the key is on and engine is off.

I understand that its not supposed to stay on. It doesn't come on at all when starting the car. However, I can tell that the bulb is not burnt out, because if I turn the key half way (without turning the engine) the bulb will illuminate). It should come on for ~2 seconds and then turn off if no issue is detected.

Key on, engine off - CEL will illuminate for two seconds, then turn off.
Key on, engine off - CEL not suppoosed to illuminate.

It only comes one for a couple seconds when you turn the key on to let you know its checking for errors. Then it shuts off.

on this topic, i have a 2000 Acura TL... Honda similarity. not starting on key turn. MIL/CEL never lights... nor does immobilizer key. i do have most other dash light coming on during key to on/start. i have been troubleshooting an ACG S fuse blowing and fuel pump never gets engaged, but realized that these lights never come on, so concerned their circuits are causing/contributing to no start.
any thoughts?
