Default CEL came on after avoiding crash.

So I just bought a Honda Accord 2000 v6 and it's been driving fine. Has 95k miles never in an accident. The car runs great.

I avoided a crash about an hour ago by flooring the car. Instantly the CEL came on. I stopped immediately and checked the car. No funky sounds or smells. So I'm stumped. I don't have a code reader.

What do you guys think it is? My step dad says he'll check the engine tomorrow

I bet it's a P0420 code - catalyst below threshold - but who knows, could be anything. Get it read at your local Auto Parts store - the majority of them will check it for free.

With the exception of California, Autozone or O'reilly's in other States should read the trouble codes for you for free. Get the trouble code read and post the number.

P0401
P0706

Are the codes that got pulled. The little reader said it was so something about gas and something about transmission

P0401 is for EGR insufficient flow, your EGR port is probably partially blocked and should be cleaned out.

P0706, no such code

P1706 is for Transmission Range switch(open circuit), which does not trigger the CEL or D4 light to blink. Which may have been an issue for a while.

P0401 is Insufficient EGR flow.

Clogged EGR port is a relatively common issue with your generation Accord V6. See copy of service bulletin from awhile back.
http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq/tsb/accord/A99-085.pdf

P0706 is Transmission Range Switch (Open) circuit

Check that the connector for the transmission range switch is firmly attached and wiring looks okay.

Then pull the passenger side Fuse No. 13 for 10 seconds to reset the PCM. Afterward, drive it, to if the Check Engine Light comes back on (it may take more than one drive cycle). If it does, get the code(s) read again and see if the same codes exist.

My step dad took off the battery and reset the CEL. Hopefully it doesn't come back. He says it's not something too important. Is it?

Insufficient EGR flow will affect emissions, it will also cause a lean misfire at cruise which will cause a pulsing or stumbling feel while at part throttle.

Range switch is what tells the computer what gear you have selected.
If the PCM does not know what gear you have selected it may affect how the transmisison shift. If it becomes worse the transmission may no longer shift and go into limp mode, usually stuck in second gear.

If the code comes back you should fix it.

Yeah it came back. Is there a DIY way of fixing it? How can I fix it?

Thank you for the help.

Oh alright I hadn't noticed. My car is a 2000 model. Would that diagram still apply for the switch? It says 98-99. Thanks. Currently in school, I'll go to autozone and check the ecu after.

Yes, the transmission range switch is the same for 98-02.

Honda re-uses some photos to cover different years. The 98-99 had an external ignition coil, where the 00-02 V6 didn't have that coil in the photo. 00-02 V6 had individual coil over plugs.

Just pulled the p1491 code. Seems to be the egr lift from what I could find. Should I get a brand new egr valve?
Every code I've pulled seems to point towards the egr valve. My dad says he knows how to fix it but didn't explain much so I'm taking my car to him. I'll show him what you guys showed me just in case. Hopefully this doesn't run too deep into my pockets.

Also, my dad had put some fluid into the transmission that was some sort of treatment. It seems to have worked. That code didn't pop up.

For the EGR related codes, see the bulletin in my previous post, it may just be due to a clogged EGR port.
