Car wont start/dies out of the blue?!
So today I went out to start my car and it started up just fine. So I go to put on my seat belt and my car just dies. I crank it a few more times then it starts. I start driving i get half a block down and then it just dies again. This time for good.
I checked my volt meter and when the car is off its at 12.8. So its not the battery. And i can hear the starter going when i try and crank over the car.
Anyone have any ideas? Fuel pump/ fuel filter? Alternator?

No start situations are always the same. You need to look at a bunch of things systematically.
1. got fuel?
is the tank empty
turn the ignition to on and listen if your fuel pump is buzzing. Have a friend stick his ear near the gas fill hole.
get under the hood, and after cranking it for a bit, smell for gas.
You may also disconnect the fuel line going to the fuel rail and crank. Check if gas is reaching it.
2. If this checks out, take a sprak plug out stick it in the plug wire, hold it to the block and crank. Look for spark at the spark plug.
3. Now if this checks out, then you need to look at a couple of sensors and such.
Can you check what i wrote in point 1 and 2 first?

Oil levels or leaks have nothing to do with it...
If the car cranks, then starter is fine...
DO what i wrote in my previous post and come back here if it does not check out right.

Providing you have at least 12.2 v (I think that is the threshold number) at the battery, you are good . The alternator should add another volt or two to that figure, this is EZ enough to check. (13.5 to 14.5 roughly)
I surely hope you do not have 125K miles on the fuel filter(s) - unless you are going for a record !
A gage should be used to measure the pump output, but I do not know what the serviceable number is.
We have 145K on our '97 Accord - the same may well happen to us.

Re: Car wont start/dies out of the blue?! (earthworm)
I had a friend crank the motor over while I listend for the fuel pump and didn't hear any clicking at all. I even put my ear right above the fuel pump in the trunk and listend in and nothing.
We cranked it for awhile and didn't smell any fuel under the hood.
I am not sure when the filter was replaced last. I am the 2nd owner and got the car at 60k.
I am pretty sure i need a few filter but do i also need a new pump.
(i cant find my tools to check the spark plugs but the dizzy, plugs, wires were all replaced about 20k ago. The wires were a little longer with about 40k ago.

Ok, now if you can't hear the pump, you can stop there for now. DOn't need to check for spark or anything like that.
DO you have a multimeter?
Get to the fuel pump connector.
Put your multimeter (if you don't have one, you can use a test light) and probe the signal wire and the ground.
Turn your ignition on, and see if you have voltage. If you have voltage, you need a new fuel pump.
If no voltage, then you need to check the main relay (feel it click) or your wires going to the pump for broken wires and such,

Oil levels or leaks have nothing to do with it...
If the car cranks, then starter is fine...
DO what i wrote in my previous post and come back here if it does not check out right.

i usually like to start with the simple things...i have found this to work. i said to check the oil levels simply because it's possiple to spin a bearing if all the oil leaks out....if this happens you will the hear a vrroom sound from the starter but the engine will not turn..it's just a simple thing thats all.....
i said it might be the starter because there is a coil inside the starter that can be damaged...the resistance of the coil can be affected causing the efficienct of the starter to be decreased....thus not enough power is provided to turn the crank as many time as it needs to start
mr. shovel... i was merely presenting my opinion..no disrespect intended but look deeper into ideas before you trash them
p.s. you suggestions were good ones as well

Re: Car wont start/dies out of the blue?! (BlueFang08)
Same thing happened to me today about an hour later...wierd. But I was driving on the Intersate and my car just died as if it ran out of gas. I just put gas in so I'm guessing that it's the fuel pump or something along those lines like BlueFang's. So blue, what did you do to fix it. I hear a little noise from my Fuel Pump when the car is turned into on, but my engine just rotates and no actual start. I'm going to get a filter and try that, but I'd want to know if before I make the trip down to where my car stopped, about 25 miles away, should I get the Pump and be ready to use it. Cause I figure if I can hear the pump just a little, then it's working but the filter isn't giving enough gas to it so it's really quiet.

I was the relay, went and got a new one and works just fine now. I wasn't getting any power when I tried to start my car.

Holy...! So it could also be my relay. Oh that's too cool. *sarcasm*! So what do you guys still think of mine? It's getting power, cause I can hear it but it's really quiet where it used to be loud.
Thx
